Larry Hurtado is one of the world's foremost scholars of early Christianity and textual matters related to its primary sources.

This commentary on Mark's Gospel certainly fits the bill if you are looking for a commentary that is reasonably short, doesn't require knowledge of Greek, but is substantial in its depth of treatment.

This work, as Prof. Hurtado concedes, is a brief on introductory matters. It should be supplemented by the standard introductions of Carson & Moo, Guthrie and Brown.
