Book Description

June 7, 1998 6 and up1 and up
Mark McGwire is baseball's first slugger since Babe Ruth to hit 50 or more home-runs in consecutive seasons. The St. Louis Cardinals' first baseman was the first player in major league history to hit thirty or more home runs in each of his first four seasons. Mark McGwire: Slugger! is a biography of the baseball superstar geared toward children ages 6-11. Slugger! describes how McGwire overcame poor eyesight and various injuries to become one of the most revered hitters in baseball today. He quickly has become an almost legendary figure in St. Louis, the home to baseball legends such as Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Red Schoendienst and Ozzie Smith. McGwire thought about being a police officer growing up, but he hit a home run in his first Little League at-bat and the rest is history.

"Slugger!" introduces McGwire to young readers in an easy-to-read and informative way. Featuring more than 25 color photos from the files of The Sporting News, the book chronicles McGwire's life from his disappointing experiences as an 8-year old Little Leaguer to the heights of major league baseball. --Baseball America October 26-November 8, 1998 Everett Merrill

5.0 out of 5 stars Slugger is a real hit with second graders, October 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Mark McGwire Slugger! (Hardcover)
I used this biographical book in conjunction with a baseball unit that I was teaching in my second grade classroom. Of course the initial appeal of the book to the students was the biography subject, Mark McGwire. The students were able to understand the text during a read aloud and enjoyed the photos. The book has an interesting layout and is a good read-aloud for 2nd or 3rd grade. As an educator I appreciated the book not only for the biographical information but also for the underlying message of the book. Mark McGwire touches on a variety of topics including losing your temper, needing to see a counselor, and trying your best even through times of adversity. I would recommend the book highly. Weeks after our baseball unit has concluded, Mark McGwire - Slugger is still a hot book in our reading center. The children are reading it over and over again.
