Editorial Reviews

Review

"A heartwarming tale of Christmas past that's chock full of all the wit and hilarity we admire in America's favorite humorist--Mark Twain. Carlo DeVito brings us back one hundred years to a magical time in Twain's family life, revealing a house that's brimming with love and laughter, as well as the profound heartbreaks of life. A Mark Twain Christmas only deepens our understanding and respect for both the man and his work." (Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America)

This is a heartwarming account of various Christmas' at Mark Twains house. There are happy times and also times of heart break. This is a great addition to my Christmas books for the holiday season.

Format: Hardcover
Very small book - if it were a standard size, the length would be nowhere near the stated 162 pages. The few stories contained feel like they should have been included as part of a larger biography of Mark Twain. If they were, it would only equate to a chapter or two. I would estimate only about half of the book (probably less) is taken from Twain's own writings with the author and writings from Twain's family members filling in the rest. The writing was solid and the stories and insight into Twain's family life were certainly entertaining but I was very disappointed with the length of the book and feel that this should only be purchased by die hard Twain fans who have read everything else he's written. Readers would be better served reading a full biography of Twain if they are interested in his personal life. On a final note, for a Christmas book, it had more than its fair share of sadness - certainly not a book I will pick up during the holiday season to get me in the Christmas spirit.

I found the book very interesting, but confess I have never read much about Mark Twain and his life. The first story was humorous, and I was disappointed the rest of the book was rather serious.

Great book! I read it in one sitting and couldn't help but marvel over Twain's creativity.
