Book Description

9 and up4 and upFor Kids series
Nineteenth-century America and the world of Samuel L. Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, come to life as children journey back in time with this history- and literature-laden activity book. The comprehensive biographical information explores Mark Twain as a multi-talented man of his times, from his childhood in the rough-and-tumble West of Missouri to his many careers—steamboat pilot, printer, miner, inventor, world traveler, businessman, lecturer, newspaper reporter, and most important, author—and how these experiences influenced his writing. Twain-inspired activities include making printer’s type, building a model paddlewheel boat, unmasking a hoax, inventing new words, cooking cornpone, planning a newspaper, observing people, and writing maxims. An extensive resource section offers information on Twain’s classics, such as Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, as well as a listing of recommended web sites to explore.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8–This book brings together the intrigue and excitement that were part of Samuel Clemens's life, captures his eccentricities, highlights his strengths, and displays his frailties. The times in which he lived are expertly described; for example, the ramifications of the Civil War and the effects of the gold rush become part of the writer's story. The parallels between Clemens's life and the experiences of the characters in many of his books are also made clear. Rasmussen's folksy, familiar style of writing demonstrates a strong comfort level with his subject and an accurate understanding of his audience. Woven throughout the narrative are activities that range from elaborate, time-consuming projects such as making printer's type with potato cutouts to easy, almost simplistic ideas such as being a detective simply by watching people and then making notes about them. Abundant sidebars, illustrations, and photographs all provide interesting tangents for readers to explore. While libraries are chock-full of books about Clemens, some even by Rasmussen, this one will be appealing to many young readers.–Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA

From Booklist

Gr. 4-7. This appealing biography will make a useful resource for teachers and student researchers. Beginning with Twain's childhood in Hannibal, Missouri, and continuing through his days as a riverboat pilot and a gold prospector in the West, Rasmussen explains how real-life characters and episodes of Twain's life became such literary creations as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He also chronicles Twain's failures as a prospector and a businessman; his successes as a writer, lecturer, and storyteller; and his personal joys and sorrows as a family man. Plentiful black-and-white photos show Twain in his many occupations, as well as images of his family and homes, while etchings, reproduced news excerpts, and sidebars expand readers' understanding of Twain's times. Explanations of phrases such as "the Big Muddy" and activities for students round out this useful offering. A list of Twain's works, with "comments on their suitability for young readers," is appended, along with Web sites, relevant "places to visit," and a bibliography for young readers. Karen Hutt

More About the Author

I was born and raised in Northern California. Not long after graduating from the University of California, with a major in the dismal science, I moved to Southern California, where I have remained ever since. At UCLA, I earned a doctorate in African history. My teaching career in that field was regrettably brief, but I later published five books on the subject. Meanwhile, I got into editing work and eventually became a reference book editor. (If you search my name in Amazon books, many of the titles that come up will be reference works I've edited.)

Around 1990, my life began to take an unexpected turn when I renewed my youthful interest in Mark Twain by vowing to read everything he wrote. To give my reading focus, I collected interesting passages from Mark Twain's work with the idea of publishing a quote collection with the reference-book publisher for whom I had written a book on Zimbabwe. I am now astonished to realize that I have published seven books on Mark Twain--with two more due out soon--and have something of a reputation of an authority in Mark Twain studies. How did that happen? I'm not sure, but it has certainly made my life more exciting.

It's now early 2012, and I am a year away from retirement from my editing job. I used the past year to finish two more Mark Twain books, and I'm now on the threshold of branching into other writing fields. I'm hoping that the best is yet to come.

This review is from: Mark Twain for Kids: His Life & Times, 21 Activities (For Kids series) (Paperback)
My seven year old grandson got right into this well done book. He quickly found
a typical Twain statement to the effect that God made idiots as practice for
making school boards. For me, having him connect to Twain in that way was worth the
whole cost of the book and the reason I bought it for him. And, being from Missouri, a
special pleasure. Learning this realistic and somewhat cynical approach to life
at a young age is not a bad thing. By age seven, eight for sure, it's time for a
kid to use what they have learned critically. A Jewish proverb says, "As you are
at seven, so you will be at seventy." Having Mark Twain on your team should improve
the journey.
