Book Description

August 1996
McAvoy Layne opens his one-man show with Twain's remark, " . . . Letters from the Earth will never be published . . . in fact, it couldn't be, because it would be a felony." And, indeed, until 1962, most of these remarkable pieces were considered too controversial for publication. This is vintage Twain--a sharp, witty, imaginative, and sometimes wildly irreverent satire of his times.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Sharp, witty, sometimes wildly funny, sometimes dark and sacrilegious, Letters From The Earth was Mark Twain's most controversial work. Its publication was suppressed for many years after his death by his wife who was scandalized at his irreverence. McAvoy Layne's narration is perfect, the recording values are flawless. -- Midwest Book Review

From AudioFile

[Editor's Note: The following is a combined review with WILD HUMORIST OF THE WEST.]--In these two short volumes of Twain writing the author is impersonated by McAvoy Layne. HUMORIST consists of various autobiographical works woven together as an evening's entertainment and recorded before a studio audience. Here one hears age as well as the state of Missouri in the actor's voice. In EARTH, edited from the posthumously published letters from a terrestrial exile, his tone has more clarity and less of the South. In both, he does a creditable job reproducing the author's personality and holding the audience, though one could wish for more expressiveness.
