As you might imagine, this is not your standard informational book on the Civil War. It is a collection of stories, not necessarily true or factual. They are not meant to be. They are, nevertheless, stories that give you a deep feeling for the way it really was in Twain's area.
Embellished to the hilt. Some, hysterical. In my opinion, no one has the command of words that Twain has, and of course that is true here as well. If you want a very personal view of these men with Twain, you will have a view that you would never have expected to have. Just a bunch of hometown boys who had no idea how they got where they were, or what they were supposed to do. In one story he tells of the first shot they heard, and what did they do but turn the other way and run as fast as they could, falling over each other in the process. I highly recommend this book.

I throughly enjoyed this book. I am a Mark Twain admirer,and I found this book to be insightful and informative.
