Editorial Reviews

''Mark Weigle's deep, flannel-warm voice is the stuff of bunkhouse fantasies, but his story-telling lyrics are so much more than seductive. They reach to the very core of what it means to be a man loving a man. If you like your hard-on with a heart on its sleeve, this is the cowboy for you.'' -Armistead Maupin. This disc of 16 new tracks is a great introduction to Mark's story songs as well as a must have for every Weigle fan!

This guy is my musical hero. I first encountered -- and fell in love with -- Mark Weigle's music three years ago. It strikes me as criminal that he is not better known and recognized for the brilliant and beautiful music he has made since "The Truth Is. I also should add that we have since become friends. So while it behooves me to add that disclaimer, it also causes me to beg of you not to pass by on Mark's sixth album just because of my nepotism. Like a good Bourbon or finely hewn piece of woodcraft, maturity is adding finesse and luster to the gay country/folk music of Mark Weigle.

Mark is unafraid of calling things as he sees then. There are songs that take pokes at our own stereotyping, as when he sings "you gay your way and I'll go mine" on "Rainbow Ride." Pointing out that not every gay male has a gym-membership or shops at A&F, Mark makes songs that a large portion of the community can relate to. It makes the UB40 reggae lead off track, "White Boy," an all the more humorous take on het-guy paranoias.

"Women want to cut off your balls.
Us gay guys want to do you,
oh, and you might like it, too."

Having a future family member make the remark (when he found out there was one of US in the family) "if he makes a pass at me, I'll punch him in the face," I can relate to this strain of silly stupidity. That Mark can take the wind from those sails so effortlessly makes the chuckles come easier. As our own as relationships flourish, Mark's songs of love ("Plenty" and "The One" here) are nakedly emotional. Trying to discover what brings love to you, as Mark probes in "To Know" and "All Kinds of Love" are also right on target.

He is as smooth, sincere, playful and sexy as ever on this, his latest recording. As with all his fans my hope is he will return to the studio and give us more of his beautiful mellow style.

It may be hard to listen to at times because our history is painful. Mark tells it with all of our hearts in mind, and with sincerity in memory. Mark is our voice in current popular music. DO NOT miss his poetry, even though you may cry over your identification with his imagery in the privacy of your own home. He is a thinking poet/author/handsome dude/insightful man of our time.

Something's happening he needs to capture. I hope he will. THESE days the murders continue, the hate doesn't stop, but the tide is turning, and the velocity is almost as palpable in the air as the days when AIDS body counts were chalked in the streets in front of presidential motorcades pass into memory.

Mark's voices speaks to a specific culture in an intimate way. If you are a gay man and do not have this man's music in your library you are missing a documentor of your brothers' history, a man that reflects on your personal struggles, expounds on your joys, and lays flat out your affirmation as a contributing member of broader culture today.

This attractive, diminutive man grabbed gay societal history, struggle, release, and day to day life as a subject and slung it into popular music in a voice and style with which all cultures can relate. It's not easy to tell the story of a man loving another man in the context of a society founded on Puritain ideals. Weigle does it by pointing out society's horrifying prejudice and it's highest ideals while telling the story of simple days and love, loss, and the inevitable passage of time.

Distinctly American, Mark is our musical spokesman. BUY his music. Don't bootleg it. He deserves his reward for his hard work.

An artist for the LGBT community who tried his best to record songs with a different perspective and he wrote what he lived and breathed! How sad that the gay community didnt embrace an original artist who recorded fresh music from a different perspective. I am so saddened he stopped recording. Is this his best album? no, that would probably be his first one.

But considering his limited musical output, I am forced to give each of his recordings 5 stars so that maybe someone will take the time to listen to a true original artist who stopped recording too soon.
