Book Description

Warning: This book contains violence, excessive language, and strong sexual content. It's intended to be read by mature audiences.

Part one of a two part series.

There are three things Lily Evans immediately notices about her new neighbor, Jay Lincoln. The first is his monstrous size, the second is the malicious way he glares at her, and thirdly, but most importantly, the three scars that mark his right eye. She knows the smart thing to do is stay away, but she has never met or seen anyone like him. The more time she spends with this frightening yet captivating man, the harder it becomes. He can make her hairs stand on end but he also has a sweetness to him that tugs at her heart. Soon she finds herself merged into his world full of murder, revenge, and deceit.

This is one of the best books I've read this year. I seriously could not put it down which is not a good thing since I'm at work and haven't done anything but read!! We'll just have to keep that a secret from the boss ;-).

Lily has just ended a relationship where her ex-boyfriend of two years hit her. It's Christmastime and she's back home and spending time with her family. Her mom has her take a plate of leftovers to the new neighbor who turns out to be Jay. Lily's out with her best friends at a bar for New Years Eve when she's attached by some guys behind the bar. Jay is the bouncer at the bar and ends up saving her. She talks him into teaching her self defense and they start spending a lot of time together. Jay is afraid of caring for and getting attached to Lily. He's spent his life seeking revenge and that's all he knows. He never stays in the same place long, and he doesn't let anyone get close because then he has a weakness and in his line of work, you can't afford weaknesses. However, Jay soon finds himself as wrapped up in Lily as she is him. But he knows he needs to leave soon before he is found.

I absolutely loved Jay, and I loved him from the very first minute that Lily sees him. His scars didn't scare me anymore than they did Lily. I felt immediately that he was a character I would love and enjoy getting to know. The chemistry between he and Lily is intense. I knew she was falling in love with him, because I fell right along side her. He's this big, protective bear of a man and you can't help it. The soft side he shows only Lily is warm and honest. You know he's had a tough life and you know there's a reason for his secrets, but you just want to grab him up and hug him. There's this kiss at the racetrack... WOW!

4.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars - Just Okay December 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mild Spoiler Warning*******************************
3.5 stars

So I started out really loving this book, but a few things happened that seemed out of character and had me pulling back the stars.
First, our hero is really Alpha. He's all grunt-y and angry and for some reason only our heroine is able to break through to him. I love that kind of thing. It makes the relationship extra special. The sex was also hot and pretty frequent.
The things that had me changing from loving to just liking (and feeling irritated at parts) are just on my own opinions.
1 - The heroine is in two situations in that she's been abused/beaten up. However, when she's mad at the hero she's always hitting him or hurting him out of anger. Though it's not a big deal, I didn't like it.
2 - when they go to meet an old friend of the heros, who's a hot sexy woman, the hero is all over the ow (she keeps trying to get him to leave to go have sex). He does everything but kiss her during this scene, as well as tell the ow the heroine means nothing to him (in front of heroine). They then proceed to sexy hump/dance with each other while the heroine watches and even the heroine keeps talking about how the hero is looking at the ow like he usually looks at her. With heat and sex in his eyes. That you can feel the sexual tension between the two of them. And then she's just okay with it. She doesn't even care that the hero is looking at her expressionless and humping all over his old girlfriend. This one scene pretty much ruined the whole relationship between these two for me. I don't understand how we are supposed to believe the hero's strong feelings for the heroine when he can look at an old flame like that and hump all over her on the dance floor. To me he wasn't the Alpha I thought he was.
Also, obviously it ends on a cliff, as this is part one and it's a major cliff.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't be duped by the 5 star reviews! January 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Marked Part 1: The Missing Link is a poorly written conflicted mix of Teeny Bopper meets attempted Erotic fiction. The transition within the scenes is choppy, often confusing and makes it difficult to follow the flow of the storyline, but not to worry! The plot is so goofy and predictable that you won’t even care that you’re missing parts of the narrative… you’ll just want it to end.

Although this appears to have been written as a serious and dramatic contemporary story, it’s juvenile writing style and clichéd references left me shaking my head. As if it couldn’t be worse, the writer couldn’t decide who she wanted her characters to be, having given them each numerous unrealistic and fantastical characteristics. I promised myself that I wouldn’t write a bad review unless I actually finished the book… sigh. This was a tough one.

The story starts with our hero and heroine meeting as next-door neighbors. Jay is a loner, and Lily is sent over by her mother to invite him to Christmas dinner. She is frightened by his gruff attitude and body scars, but is somehow drawn to him and his compelling eyes. He refuses to come to dinner and she ends up bringing him a plate of her mother’s food and her homemade pumpkin pie.

When Jay saves her from a viscous attack several days later, she realizes that the only way to fight off her nightmares is to sleep next to him. Sex soon follows, a relationship (of sorts) develops, and Lily starts to push Jay to tell her about his life and his mysterious past. The rest of the story is the unveiling of Jay’s actual profession, his violent past and why he didn’t want her to know about it.
