Product Description
When Kate Winthrop stumbles upon the Millbank Social Stock Market (the MSSM), she's horrified to discover that out of the 140 girls in her class, she's ranked a bleak 71. Determined not to accept her fate as a "junk bond," she and her friends, Dev and Callie, set out to make her the fastest rising stock on the Market - and their plan works.  Kate is suddenly embraced by the most popular girl in school and attracts the attention of the hottest boy.  But Kate's remarkable stock rise is coupled with a moral descent, till she is in danger of losing her friends and herself in her obsessive run to the top of the market.

Get ready for a bullish ride into the world of popularity in The Market, an irrationally exuberant new offering by the author of The Taker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection., April 4, 2008
A few months ago I stumbled onto The Taker by J.M. Steele. I loved the book and was thrilled to learn that J.M Steele had another in the works. I wasn't sure how anything could top The Taker, but apparently J.M. Steele had a plan for continued greatness.
Kate Winthrop, a high school senior, knows she may not be the most popular girl in school, but is confident that she is in good social standing. Wrong. Kate is the kind of girl who wears sneakers with jeans -- she's a little rough around the edges. Early in the book, a few well planned turns make Kate face the fact that she is not quite as popular as she had always imagined. She spends the rest of the book climbing the ladder and battling the new struggles of popularity.
So what made this book so great? Well the plot is obviously relatable to everyone. I think everyone has had that moment that said "wait, I'm not as great as i think I am. Ouch." but none of us have had this moment and the subsequent fight for justice so cleverly masterminded as J.M. Steele has for Kate. The characters are likable, but what drives the story is the need to know how The Market will manipulate everyone involved. You just want to be a part of Kate's journey through the last few weeks of high school. Will she taste the sweet nectar of high school A-lister or will she fall on her face in public humiliation? I can't say I wasn't rooting for a bit of both...

So, it's clear I loved this book. You all should probably read it too.

4.0 out of 5 stars MEAN GIRLS PT. DEUCE , September 4, 2008
I got this book for free where I work with teens and started reading it in my free time it definitely was not written for my demographic (early 20s African American Female) however I enjoyed it none the less. It reminded me A LOT of the movie MEAN GIRLS with Lindsey Lohan but of course with a twist. It took me back to my high school days and even elementary and middle school days when I along with my peers obsessed with popularity and all of the pros and cons that came along with it.

The book was a good read and had a pretty good plot and I loved how the story and characters evolved however I thought the ending was a little to happily ever after and not realistic but hey it is a fictional novel geared towards teens.

I would recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!, April 13, 2008
I am an adult who enjoys the wonderful selection offered to teens now.

I picked up this book thinking the premise was a little silly, but the authors managed to turn this superficial story into a coming of age, mature and interesting story.

I enjoyed all the characters in this book with the possible exception of the Tanner girls....they are too typical and over the top, but all the other characters, especially our main character and her best friends are wonderfully drawn and interestingly portrayed. Yes, there is a morale here and its worth reading.
