Editorial Reviews

Review

Marketplace Communication equips the senior executive or CEO with powerful weapons for the information age. These are the things that today's business world with its high-tech information age communications technology compel anyone who would be a "successful player" to master -- and for most CEOs didn't even exist when they were beginning their business careers. Marketplace Communication readers will gain ideas for improving their own personal performance as well as the confidence to use communication as an aggressive strategic tool. Merrie Spaeth (a regular commentator on the public radio business news program "Marketplace" now shares her lessons in Marketplace Communication. Its format of short anecdotes is designed for the busy executive. Marketplace Communications is highly recommended reading for established CEOs and those with an ambition of eventually becoming an executive (and ultimately a CEO in the own right). -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about communication. Must read!, July 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Marketplace Communication (Hardcover)
If you do any communicating other than talking to yourself in the bathroom mirror, Marketplace Communication is a must-read. Merrie Spaeth teaches you everything you need to know about effective communication- whether you're a corporate exec or president of the PTA. Spaeth was Director of Media Relations during the Reagan administration; she now runs her own award-winning international communications firm and serves as a commentator for National Public Radio. Thanks to this book, you can benefit from all of her experience: she takes everything she knows and serves it up on a platter in an interesting, engaging book that will make you a better communicator the day you start reading. Communication is and always has been my business. I spent 19 years as a television news reporter and anchor. When I switched professional gears to head up the Columbus Y2K Council, the first thing I did was take my well-thumbed copy of Marketplace Communication off the shelf and read it again, cover to cover. It would be easy to say that Merrie Spaeth can teach you all of the "tricks of the trade". But Spaeth says forget about trickery. She'll teach you why the truth is your best bet, and how to make sure the message you mean to convey is the one you really communicate. Spaeth makes a powerful case that no one benefits by being dishonest or misleading- not you, your clients, your employees, or that reporter you're so nervous about talking to. Dealing with the media is just a small part of Spaeth's message. Somewhere along the line just about everybody needs help with what she calls the three hardest things to say: "I'm sorry. I was fired. I quit." And there is great relief for any communicator in the section entitled "You Don't Have to Be Perfect". Merrie Spaeth's advice is wise and savvy. Even if you don't have a pressing need for communication coaching- you are sure to enjoy this interesting, fast-paced book. Above all, it's a good read.
