Book Description

November 1999 1881944255 978-1881944256
The Market's Measure begins with the story of the Dow's origins, then takes you on a journey through time, tracking the average's progress over 100+ years. Along the way, you'll gain insight into how the Dow works, what it means to the professional investor and novice alike, and where it may be headed as it hits the milestones or 10,000 and beyond.

Beautifully illustrated and bound, The Market's Measure will entice you to linger over its pages, and will provide you with the occasion to reflect on the evolution of a stock market and a nation.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Dow Jones editor/spokesperson Prestbo attempts to steer a middle course between conceit and self-assurance in this ode to the Dow Jones Index. It is unlikely that partners Charles Henry Dow, Edward Davis Jones, and Charles M. Bergstresser thought that the Wall Street Journal would last a century. It is equally unlikely that they could have predicted that their barometer for the market, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, would have held sway over the same period. Once of limited use to a small group of financiers, the index has become of general interest now that the stock market is a popular investment medium. In addition to dissecting the index, this book aligns historical events with the rise and fall of the market, providing some interesting observations along the way. While it contains a good deal of relevant information, it falls short as a finance text. 5.0 out of 5 stars Very illustrative, easy to read book, March 8, 2000

This review is from: The Market's Measure: An Illustrated History of America Told Through the Dow Jones Industrial Average (Hardcover)
This book is very easy reading, with a lot of pictures and charts, and doesn't bore you with pages upon pages on text. It traces the history of the DJIA, showing what was happening in the world when the Dow hit certain benchmarks, and provides a "Readers Digest" version of market trends, biographical profiles, and cycles in the Dow. A great coffee table book.
