5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for MS1s w/o Biochem Background
I got this book for a medical biochemistry course I took prior to entering medical school to fulfill my undergraduate degree requirements. The book then was amazing. It's explanations were easy to understand, the figures weren't confusing, and the clinical correlations helped out tremendously. When I did enter medical school, I cracked open the book again to see if it...

2.0 out of 5 stars It makes a decent doorstop
I'll be honest, I love Biochemistry and I have tried several different books but I always go back to Voet. It may be a little deep in detail for the medical community but it gives a much more clear and concise overview than this book. I gave it two stars because it does serve as an excellent doorstop.

I got this book for a medical biochemistry course I took prior to entering medical school to fulfill my undergraduate degree requirements. The book then was amazing. It's explanations were easy to understand, the figures weren't confusing, and the clinical correlations helped out tremendously. When I did enter medical school, I cracked open the book again to see if it would help with the level we were at there. It did! It seems to have a good balance in teaching the concept and integrating the deep minutia. I absolutely love this book. Whenever stuff gets a little confusing at school, I go home and read it and it clears it all up. This book comes highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Clinical Correlations, March 2, 2007

The whole point of going to medical school is to be able to solve problems and apply basic scientific principles in solving those problems. This edition gives specific and memorable clinical cases that help one to remember and apply these priniciples in clinical practice. It also comes with a CD that is a great bonus. I heartily recommend this book to help explain and use the basic medical biochemistry principles. It starts with a look at the metabolic and nutritional needs of the human body, relevent to anyone, and a great place to start, whereas many other books like, Lehninger, start out with chemical theory. This makes Marks much more relevent to the medical student and much more interesting. I recommend this book for your library and practical use. Use Lehninger to keep the door open, and read Marks to feed your brain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Medical Biochemistry Text, September 12, 2009

This review is from: Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins)) (Paperback)
This book goes beyond biochemistry by relating all concepts to how they are used clinically. It makes some of the toughest concepts easier to understand. It also makes you think about how it is related to medical practice. It keeps the student interested in what they are reading instead of boring them to sleep.

Biochem is not the easiest subject in the world but it can be more understandable if you have a good book that can simplify complex principles and this book does that. Teaching biochemistry using the clinical approach I believe allows you to apply the principles to everyday life. The book provides vignettes at the beginning of each chapter with colorful patient in the "Waiting Room" with names like "Otto Shape" and "Ann O 'Rexia" with symptoms that will correspond with the teachings of that chapter. They have color coded icons to indicate female, male and infant/young child patients. The icons appear in the margin, identifying information related to the materials in the chapter. They have clinical notes that are typically related to the patients that explain signs or symptoms. There are also method notes that elaborate on how biochemistry is performed and interpreted in lab tests. All of these little side notes allow for a greater understanding of the materials as well as enhances your critical thinking skills. This books will definitely help you get through biochemistry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, December 25, 2011
This review is from: Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins)) (Paperback)
This book is a MUST for any medical student. It is extremely helpful in explaining why each step of a cycle is important, what would happen if it's missing, and so forth- basically, clinical correlations. I tried Harper's which was good but not as clinically detailed and Lehninger was just a disaster as far as being extremely detailed and not medically related.
Mark's Basic Medical Biochemistry is the antidote to those looking for a basic yet lasting understanding of the importance of biochemistry in medicine.

This book was good for me to learn biochem. I fell asleep almost instantaneously with other books, but i could read this one, which i guess is a good thing. Has 5ish good questions at the end of each chapter to review what you learned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Clinical Biochemistry Textbook!!, March 18, 2011
This review is from: Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins)) (Paperback)
Medical students need to be able to take concepts and facts from biochemistry and relate them to a clinical problem or technique. This is a very difficult task for a student when relying on a textbook that is quite theoretical and conceptual with very few clinical examples. Mark's Basic Medical Biochemistry is excellent at providing clinical examples, problems and understanding of biochemical techniques relevant to medical students and clinicians. This book is particularly helpful to those who are entering medical school without a course in biochemistry from college. It's one of the best basic biochemistry books on the market in my opinion.
