This review is from: Mark's Gospel: A History of Its Interpretation--From the Beginning Until 1979 (Paperback)
Much as changed in how Mark is understood in scholarship. Augustine had thought of it as an epitome of Matthew and it was accordingly ignored during many centuries. Liberal Protestant scholarship had thought it to be the earliest Gospel and accordingly the most historical but this was undone in the the rise of the history of religions school and form criticism. Sean Kealy provides a fine author-centered survey of Markan scholarship of the past two millennia.
