About the Author

Rev. Bryan Sirchio is a graduate of Duke University and Princeton Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and served as solo pastor of two small northern Wisconsin congregations for four years in the mid 1980's. In 1987 Bryan began a freelance itinerant musical ministry which he refers to as Crosswind Music. He travels extensively throughout the U.S. and beyond offering concerts of his original music, leading worship services, offering retreats, and providing musical workshops and keynote addresses for regional and national denominational conferences. Rev. Sirchio has published over 200 songs, released 13 albums, 4 songbooks, and 3 study guides which turn many of his songs into youth group, confirmation, and adult Christian Education curricula. His compositions have been recorded by several other artists, used in denominational videos, and featured in various songbooks and Christian education publications. Most of Bryan's musical ministry unfolds within "mainline Protestant" circles, and in some Roman Catholic parishes as well. Bryan plays guitar and piano and has released original solo music for young children, teens, and adults. He writes in many different musical styles, depending upon the age group and purpose for which the music is created. He has also written numerous songs to be sung by congregations in the context of corporate worship. In addition to his emotionally compelling and entertaining music, what distinguishes Bryan Sirchio's work from most "contemporary Christian music" is his progressive theology, inclusive language, honoring of the earth, commitment to social justice, and compassion for the poor. Rev. Sirchio is a passionate theologian, a gifted musician, and a prophetic Christian educator who possesses unique gifts for communicating biblical truth. His music helps awaken imaginations, move hearts, stimulate minds, heal wounds, change lives, and sow seeds

I read The 6 Marks of Progressive Christian Worship Music as someone who is neither musical nor involved in the leadership of any church.

In this book, Bryan offers some helpful insights into what contemporary worship music is and how it can be effectively used.

I just finished reading The Six Marks of PCWM and thought I would share a
couple of observations. For those of us who live and worship
with conservative Christians, this book means so much. I often have felt
like I had no place in my church world...a feeling of loneliness that has no social context but
rather a sense that my thought process was singularly out of the box. As I was
reading, I was overwhelmed by the realization that other Christians share my
deepest beliefs about the challenges associated with conservative teachings!
I am inspired by the chapter on inclusive language, delighted by the notion of music speaking a language of the heart and grateful to know that other lovers of God struggle with a teaching that leads to faith through fear. Sirchio has written a book that is easy to read but leaves readers with a great deal to consider...and a longing to reach the thin place (read the book to understand that one)! This book is an important read not just for music leaders but for the rest of us looking to grow in faith through collective and personal worship. If you are like this Tigger who has felt alone in your wrestling match with conservative teachings, this book will make you smile and stretch. You are not the only one.

I first saw this book recommended by a trusted voice on Twitter. It's title spoke to me as likely very relevant to my current experience in ministry. As a UCC pastor, who loves the style but often struggles with the substance of contemporary music, in a church, which is currently enduring the tensions and frustrations of trying to integrate contemporary music into what has long been a traditional worship, this book flat out nailed the circumstances we are facing.

As a musician and an ordained UCC pastor, Sirchio is able to speak accurately to the questions and concerns of both worship leaders and clergy. He does a highly effective job of capturing all angles of the conversations happening around such a transition: theology of contemporary music, fitting the music into a more liturgical structure, teaching the new songs and style in a corporate setting. With this book, he provides a big picture view that would help to serve as an unifying ground work for any congregation or leadership team, in a progressive/mainline setting, embarking on the journey into contemporary music.

An excellent resource for educating pastors, musicians, and lay persons on the intentionality of worship as it relates to contemporary music!

I have been a fan of Bryan Sirchio's since the early 1990's, when I heard him perform at a seminar for Christian Educators in Chicago. It was my distinct pleasure to work with him at two subsequent events as well. Beyond his obvious musical gifts, this book shows him to be highly sensitive and intelligent on questions of church leadership and worship, as well. While I very much enjoyed his discussion of the 6 marks identified in the title, I was particularly struck by a chapter near the end of the book that discussed Progressive Christian Theology. If your heart and mind have been at war with a conservative and traditional (more fundamental) upbringing, this book is a wonderful place to start the examination of why the devout Christian soul can be so conflicted. I highly recommend this book.

Bryan's book and work finally provide a place for people to learn what Progressive Christian worship music is all about, as well as what some of the elements of progressive Christianity are. These are things we've learned about in recent years but is the first that I know of to put it all together in one place. Excellent read for progressive Christians, as well as those who are curious about what progressive means in a Christian context. His seminars are informative and interesting as well!
