This Italian exhibition catalog is at first glance well produced, with quality color reproductions on glossy opaque white paper. But the overall layout is confusing: the essays jump back and forth from Italian to English; there are numerous errors and inconsistencies in translation and format; and, although mostly Dumas's work is reproduced, about 80 percent of the text is devoted to Bacon. The essays' quality varies from excellent to unreadable, the worst being a pseudo-neo-Freudian deconstructionist piece of nonsense. The best essays are by Richard Francis on Bacon's literary influences and his relation to Pollock and Dumas and Maurizio Fagiolo dell'Arco's piece on Bacon's influence in Italy. The book's primary contribution is simply in making Dumas's work available to readers in the United States, as she is largely unknown here.
