From the Artist
Says Chris Blackwell, Executive Producer and Island Records Founder: "Kevin MacDonald has made a wonderful film about Marley. I think it will touch the hearts of many. It tells Bob's story properly for the first time and you get a real sense of the man and his incredible talent. His spiritual message is as relevant now as it ever was and his music still resonates around the world." Says Ziggy Marley, Executive Producer: "This documentary is the ultimate revelation of my father's life. The family is proud to be able to have the world finally experience this emotional journey."

The first question that runs through my mind after listening to a compilation like this one is, "Who is this album for?" If it were made for people who had never heard Bob Marley before, where are key classics like "Is This Love," "Buffalo Soldier," "Waiting In Vain," and "Satisfy My Soul?" Or if it were made for people who already had Legend and were looking to make the next step, then why repeat so many tracks from the Legend album? Or if this album were made for collectors, then why are there only three bona-fide rarities on this compilation?
Instead, this soundtrack ends up being another one of those cases where a record company tries to please everybody and winds up really pleasing nobody. Now, don't get me wrong - most of the music on this album is top-notch. It's a best of Bob Marley - of course it's going to be filled with great music. It's just that, with a little bit more common sense, this collection could have been much better.Read more ›
This Soundtrack provides an excellent overview and timeline for Bob Marley's music. Marley's original albums are the best way to hear this music though. The sound isn't great to me on these live performances, so audiophiles might actually love these mixes if my past experience proves informative. I like how the expertly produced pop reggae of their later career contrasts so strongly against the primitive doo wop bubblegum stuff from their earliest days.
The best thing about this compilation is that the listener can get a feel of what the creative momentum Marley had in his twenties and how the shy blooming talent became the first superstar from the Third World. His reggae music fantastically spread - from dance undemanding music became hypnotic meditative mixture of music and philosophy suitable for stadiums, clubs and home spaces but in each of these formats Marley expression remained clean. Marley sensibility was even helped by the current spirit of the times, social oppression and the ever-growing gap between the richest and poorest that is one of his most common themes, and his love songs anyway never stopped playing on the radio.
But speaking about this compilation, a few things could have been done more elegant. Making the soundtrack about musician who has at least 20-30 anthology songs shouldn't be very difficult if it's more or less known what songs are his famous. It would be correct to say "this is the best of Marley" and put that songs on two CDs but in this occasion we have a mixed approach of "best of" with a bit of "avant-garde" leaving listener confused because the different elements don't complement each other in the best way.Read more ›
Beware of the closing credits. It gets really really dumb. I mean REALLLLLLLLLLLLY dumb. Don't watch the very end. Once you see it, you can't un-see it!
4 stars instead of 5 for the retarded end sequence.
