We bought this prior to our trip to Italy. The idea was that it would / could / should help us to order at restaurants while there. Yeah... that was wishful thinking I guess. Most of the things that we looked for weren't there. Most of the things that were in the book weren't on the menu or were named / presented quite differently in context. It didn't help us at all and...

This review is from: The Marling Menu-Master for Italy: A Comprehensive Manual for Translating the Italian Menu into American-English (Marling menu masters series) (Paperback)
As an eighteen year flight attendant with a major airline, I cannot express how useful and beneficial the Marling Menu series of books are. I have used not only the "Italian" version, but also the "Espana" "French" and "German" versions too.

If you love to travel, but find the menu to be particularly challenging ... this is the book for you. It is inexpensive, small enough to not weigh down your travel bags, and most of all - I have yet to run across any menu item that is not completely and accurately described in intimate detail in this little "bible." You will not believe how much easier meal time in a foreign location is with this book - and because it is so easy to use, you will find that your gastronomic adventures are no longer a guessing game, but are enjoyable experiences.

Personally, I will not leave home without my Marling Menu Master. This book should be #1 on your list, it is on mine.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you are going to Italy, don't leave home without it!, August 5, 1999

This review is from: The Marling Menu-Master for Italy: A Comprehensive Manual for Translating the Italian Menu into American-English (Marling menu masters series) (Paperback)
The Marling Meanu Master is the best book I've seen for eating out in Italy. It breaks the menu down by category, antipasta, pasta, fish, meats, vegtables and desserts. It is written to translate the menu into english. Other guides I've seen do the opposite, which is very difficult to use.

Having traveled with Marling's Menu Masters in the past, I can't believe that anyone would go to Europe without one. It is essential to enjoying a major part of any trip to Western Europe. Even with only superficial knowledge of the language you can decifer even the most comprehensive menu. The perfect way to utilize it is to order a glass of wine, and then take your time and translate the menu. Because Marling's organization will closely mirror the menu's organization, you can quickly move through it, and even discover the ingredients in sauces. Why guess? Turn your lunch or dinner into a dining experience.

I lived in Yurp for 15 years as a sort of professional tourist. My travel documents that I considered mandatory were passport, the Michelin guides (both green and red), and the Menu Master for all the countries published. Wouldn't travel without any of them.

This review is from: The Marling Menu-Master for Italy: A Comprehensive Manual for Translating the Italian Menu into American-English (Marling menu masters series) (Paperback)
The Marling Menu-Master for Italy is a great little guide. It is easy to carry being small and light and is a great aid in deciphering an Italian menu. I ordered one of these three years ago and I have used it a lot since. Unfortunately I lost it and had to order another one. I promptly received the Italian guide. Luckily I looked it over before leaving for Italy because although the title of the book indicated it was an Italian guide, the interior of the book was the Spanish guide (even though interior still indicated it was the Italian guide). I would have been at a loss in Italy with a guide to Spanish menus. I returned that one and received another. Same thing - Italian cover with Spanish contents. It took three tries to get the correct one. I noticed that the book is now printed in China (unlike my earlier guide). It appears quite clear that the Chinese do not know the difference between Spanish and Italian. This is a great little book but make sure you take a look at it to ensure that you have the correct guide while in Italy. Sad that the editors saw fit to cheapen this fine guide by outsourcing its production. How much did they really save (or how much more profit did they pocket) when one takes into account the waste that must result from destroying defective books? Also, the best restaurants in Italy are small trattorias and osterias. These restaurants cater to locals and frequently do not have English menus, which is where the Marling Menu-Master really shines. Five stars if not printed in China.

My family has been using Marling "Menu-Busters", as we call them, since the mid-1980s, and I was very happy to see that they are still available today. We have used them in the Italian, French, and Spanish versions, and they are all great. Easy to use and small enough to put in a shirt pocket, the soft plastic cover is rugged and durable. Since European menus are almost always arranged by courses, the Marling Menu-Master is arranged the same way, and we hardly ever found a food item that doesn't show up in this guide. If you are only purchasing one such book, you should consider this first.

The Martling Menu Master is a great guide for everyone who travels to Italy and likes to eat. The guide helps you to decipher the menu so you can rest assured you are ordering what you wanted. Not sure what ingredients make up a dish, check the guide. We've used the French guide on prior vacations and now this one will get us through Italy.

Bought this book and I don't leave home without it when I travel to Italy. My friends have even borrowed it for their trips.

If you have food allergies, you should have this book to help you know what ingredients are in the food you are eating.

Also it helps to explain the differences in types of foods, regional foods, the courses served.

Educate yourself before exploring Italy's food with this great book.

It's sized to fit in a pocket, or easily in your travel bag, takes no room at all. It's a must for travelers.
