Amazon.com

This warm, snazzy-looking down jacket, from popular outdoor outfitter Marmot, brings the company's all-mountain warmth to wintry city streets. Available in a variety of style-conscious colors, the jacket is made of surprisingly lightweight, "down-proof" fabric that won't let precious warmth-boosting feathers escape. With a certified minimum 800 fill power of Marmot's renowned, top-quality down, the Zeus additionally features a wind flap tucked behind the front zipper to seal out the wind-driven cold, and the entire jacket packs down into its own stow pocket for easy packing (and a handy travel or camp pillow).

Features

  • Durable, lightweight fabric prevents down feathers from escaping
  • 800 fill power goose down for maximum warmth; certified/guaranteed minimum fill
  • Zippered hand pockets
  • Entire jacket packs into pocket
  • Wind flap behind front zipper protects against drafts
  • Elastic draw cord hem for adjustability in serious weather
  • Angel-Wing Movement allows full range of motion without jacket riding up

Marmot Down
Marmot often says that "down is in our DNA." The company was founded in 1974 as a manufacturer and seller of premium down jackets, vests, and sleeping bags, and continues to use fine quality goose down for its insulated outdoor products. Mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts the world over rely on Marmot down gear for warmth, comfort, and sometimes survival.

Down quality is determined by fill power and durability, which is dependent upon the age and maturity of the bird and the processing of the down. The best down comes from larger, more mature birds and goose down is generally better than duck down. More mature goose down has larger filament clusters than less mature goose down and these clusters, when grouped, provide many more trapped air pockets and therefore provide better insulation. To maximize the effectiveness of the down clusters, proper processing of the down -- sorting, washing, and drying -- is required to open them up.

Higher fill power means higher loft, better insulation, lighter weight, and greater durability. Marmot tests all of its down for content, cleanliness, species, and fill power, guaranteeing minimum fill power for all down clothing and sleeping bags.

Lifetime Warranty
Marmot products include a limited lifetime manufacturer's warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

About Marmot
In April 1971, University of California Santa Cruz students Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley were in Alaska on the Juneau ice fields for a Glaciology school project. This was where the idea of Marmot, originally a collegiate climbing club, began. Reynolds and Huntley soon began making prototypes of down products such as vests and sleeping bags in their dorm room in Santa Cruz. By the spring of 1973, Reynolds and Huntley partnered with fellow climber Tom Boyce to open a modest rental and retail location, named Marmot Mountain Works, in a 100-year-old building in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Their first large order was for 108, as the producer called them, ""very puffy jackets"" for the movie The Eiger Sanction, with Clint Eastwood, which helped make down outerwear fashionable. In 1976, Marmot was one of the first companies to recognize the value of a new technology being developed by W.L. Gore & Associates. Marmot was soon producing waterproof Gore-Tex sleeping bags, with Reynolds and Huntley testing early prototypes by sleeping in meat lockers and under fire sprinklers, and later introduced the waterproof/breathable fabric into nearly all Marmot products.

From humble beginnings, Marmot and its product line have grown over the years, and today the company is headquartered in Rohnert Park, California, with offices all over the world and distribution in more than 60 countries.

I bought this when it was on sale at a local discount store. So far I have been pleasantly surprised by it.

Warmth - This is sooo warm for how lightweight it is. This morning I missed the bus and had to walk around a mile and a half to campus when it was hovering around -2 F outside. I had on a nice sweater underneath and it kept me plenty warm during my walk. Now, I wouldn't use just this if I were going to go sit somewhere in that temperature, but while moving around it was great.

Durability - So far it has held up pretty well. I've worn it almost everyday and have yet to spot any problem areas. A little bit of down has come out but not nearly as much as other down coats I've had. As others have mentioned, the material is quite thin, though, and I'm pretty sure this would tear if you wore it hiking and snagged a branch.

A few random thoughts:

- One of my favorite things is that the pockets are so warm. The pockets are placed under the down filling, rather than over so they get insulated too. My hands are always the first thing to get cold, but they stay nice and toasty in this jacket.

- I haven't had any problems with the zipper catching so far as mentioned by another reviewer.

- They seem to run a little big also. I wear a large in almost everything but the medium in this fits well and still leaves me plenty of room to wear a sweater or thin hoodie underneath.

- If you're planning on wearing this in rain or snow I would probably get a lightweight shell as this isn't very water resistant.

- It packs into its own pocket for easy storage.

If you're looking for a lightweight winter jacket that will keep you warm under most circumstances I would definitely recommend the Marmot Zeus!

I purchased to wear under my waterproof shell when temps dip while riding my motorcycle. In Maine, the weather in the spring can be unpredictable. I go on a ride and the weather will suddenly drop from 70 to 40 without warning. This jacket packs small in my backpack and will keep me warm when the temps dip. It's not too bulky to wear under my jacket. The fabric is very soft and I suspect it wouldn't be very durable if used without a shell. So far, though, it's held up well.

I use it for winter hiking and am quite comfortable in it. It's easily packable in it's own pocket. Very light weight and warm on really cold days.

I was looking for a warm, light jacket that was packable. This was it. I highly recommend it.

PRO's
1) very light weight down jacket
2) packs in it's pocket
3) warm
4) not squishy sounding like a lot of down jackets

CON's
1) It's somewhat small. I normally wear a Large in Columbia products. This fits a little small so I went with the XL. I am very pleased with the fit. It's snug enough to prevent cold air from sneaking in, but large enough I can wear a fleece underneath.

Note: I am 6'1" and sometimes I need a Tall version of a jacket. This Marmot is also a little long so I definitely was fine with the regular (not tall). It hangs just below my belt by about an inch which I think is a good idea for winter hiking.

Very warm for the weight. I wear it in 10-20 degree weather with a sweater under it and I'm fine. I've had it for a year and worn it for almost 2 winters now and its still in great shape. I was concerned that the outer fabric was too lite and would tear easily, but it has held up well. I wouldn't take it bushwacking through thorn patches but for the most part it does fine outdoors.

I have all kinds of jackets. Way too many in fact. I searched for awhile for the perfect down jacket, and with this purchase, I found it.

It weighs almost nothing, and yet keeps me perfectly warm and comfortable. The material is really soft and lightweight, and it breathes just the right amount. The down filling is the perfect amount - not too stuffy or too scarce. The elastic around the wrists is slightly looser than my wrists so it's comfortable while still keeping the jacket on. The zipper is durable and glides easily.

Couldn't be happier with this purchase. All my other jackets are now lonely :)

This jacket is like a miracle. The 800 fill down is extremely warm, unbelievably light and a joy to wear when the temp dips into the winter realm. Its not too bad (or warm) for those spring or fall cool days or nights. It packs down into its own pocket and can be either stashed into a pack taking up little room or it can be used as a very soft pillow. It just plain looks as good as it warms the body too. But perhaps best of all, it is so light that you can pack a great deal of warmth in your pack and not even realize you are packing it around. Then you can whip it out at hike's end and be toasty and smiley as you cook dinner in camp. If you are interested in having a very packable and very warm piece of luxury, get this jacket. I did and I am glad I did.
