Bag that actually meets its rating, November 23, 2010
This review is from: Marmot Trestles 0 Sleeping Bag (Misc.)
Fantastic value.
We are under a blizzard warning currently, and it has been very cold with 25 mph winds. I took the bag outside this evening and used it for a couple of hours. It is currently 10 degrees F. With the wind chill, it can feel like -8F. I picked a spot out of the wind, since I would not be using a tent.
I inflated and laid out an Exped Synmat 7 pump which has an R value of 4.9.
Clothing worn = Fleece top and bottoms, Smartwool medium weight merino socks. Standard winter hat pulled over my head.
I cinched up the hood, snapped the draft collars closed and cinched them up as well. I laid my head on a fleece covered poly filled neck horeshoe thingy (like people use on airplanes?)
I was plenty warm. Surprised at how great I felt, even with the blowing snow. My glasses would catch the snow, and then it would melt and run onto my face. I stashed my glasses inside the little pocket. When I got out, I was lightly dusted from head to toe with snow.
When the wind whipped out around the house and curled up on me, I could feel the heat leave the bag. So make sure you are in a tent, protected from the elements. My test was just to see how it would perform before I take it to a couple of winter camps we have over the next month or two.
I also tried this a couple weeks ago just after it arrived. It was 19F and I set up a tent on snow in the back yard. I was very warm/comfortable in that situation as well.
The reason I picked this bag is because Marmot actually uses the EN (European Norm) rating for sleeping bags. There is a stringent suite of tests done that ensure you are getting what is advertised.
Couple of things. I tried to sleep in this indoors, and it is much too hot -- this is expected. I plan on trying it out during a summer trip where nights will stay in the 40s -- I'm hoping this will be cool enough for me to remain comfortable and not too hot. I keep the house heated to the high 60s F indoors, to give you an idea of what was too hot.
I am 5 feet 10.5 inches tall and purchased the Regular Left Zip bag, since I am right-handed. I weigh 175 pounds.
I am considering buying another one of these for my wife -- in a right zip, so that we can mate them. That's another cool thing about the Trestles series. You can mate them if you buy left/right zip opposites.

Great bag, just too big, July 16, 2009
After doing extensive research on sleeping bag I decided Marmot was the way to go. Their bags are roomy, constructed with care, and attention to detail are in my opinion the best I've seen in my quest for sleeping bags.
This bag is rated for 0 degrees and let me tell you it is one hot bag. I knew I needed a sleeping bag that could keep me warm in colder temps because my boyfriend wants to do winter camping this year plus being a female we tend to get on the chillier side of things. I read on the label the bag will keep you alive to extreme temperatures of -41, now I wouldn't suggest anyone go field test this but from what I could tell this had a lot of insulation to support that claim (more on this later).
A word about sizing, I am a rather tall woman (just under 6 feet) of average build so finding a sleeping bag to fit me was hell. If a man or woman is anywhere close to 6 feet get the tall size!!! I would guess someone who is 5'10 or shorter would be more than happy with a regular sized bag but if you are taller than that opt for a long especially if you like to stuff your clothes in the feet of your bag. I ordered a long and had enough room to feel comfortable but not enough that I was drowning in the bag.
While this sleeping bag was great I did end up returning it due to its LACK OF COMPRESSABILITY. If you are a backpacker this is a vital piece of information. I have a large pack and this bag no matter how hard we tried would not fit. The bag does come with its own compression sack from Marmot which was well constructed. The bag did not fit in the compression sack and would not even cinch down to a managable size in a Sea to Summit compression sack (an XL size if that gives you any idea how big this bag really is).
Since this bag is rated for 0 degrees you have extra filling on your hands which means added weight. It weighed in at about 5 pounds, if you are concerned with weight and compressability get the Never Summer by Marmot. My boyfriend has that bag and has nothing but praise for it. It is a down bag so the price tag is a bit higher.
If you are someone who is not overly concerned about the size and weight of your sleeping bag then get this bag, it is great and full of great features (like the double zip on both sides, stash pocket, comfy foot box, etc.). If you are a backpacker who needs to keep weight and size in mind go for a down bag like the Never Summer.
After I returned this bag I wrestled with the idea of buying a Never Summer for myself though decided against it because I wasn't sure I would like backpacking that much to justify the $278 of the cost of just the sleeping bag.
I did end up finding another 0 degree synthetic bag, the Elkhorn made by The North Face. It weighs less and is able to be easily compressed to fit into the bottom compartment of my pack. It still is bulky and a bit heavy at a little over 4 pounds but for the price ($119) it can't be beat.
Overall if you're not worried about the price or damp conditions get the Never Summer, though if you are a car camper or trying to save money go for the Trestles it really cannot be beat.

Best Bag Ever!, September 26, 2011
This review is from: Marmot Trestles 0 Sleeping Bag (Misc.)
I can't say enough about this bag. I have never had a sleeping bag that I enjoyed as much. My husband and kids have bags with fleece lining, and I always feels like I am trapped. The inside of the Marmot is silky. It is wonderfully warm. The hooded area feels warm, but not claustrophobic. And I LOVE the little pocket. I kept my IPhone in there with the alarm on. Didn't have to worry about where it would be in the morning! Definitely will be buying more of these for the rest of my kids.
