Book Description

October 4, 2007
Jon & April are the perfect advertisement for the All-American blue collar family. They are young, attractive, have two kids, a nice Victorian home, and make an honest living. To friends and family they appear to be the ideal couple, however the walls of their home tell a different story. Once deeply in love, Jon and April now struggle to even be in the same room together. From love & certainty, to discouragement and confusion; both have needs in their relationship that are no longer being met as the romantic element has dissipated. When faced with temptation, will filling this temporary void destroy any hope of reconciliation? Marriage As Advertised is a glimpse into a troubled union, and how communication lines between a man and woman can get lost in translation. Journey with this couple as they reach a defining point in their marriage. Relationships will be born, family secrets will be uncovered; temptation will lure them, tragedy will test them. Will April and Jon have what it takes to turn their relationship around, or will they continue to conceal their problems with the pretense - Marriage As Advertised.

4.0 out of 5 stars It Isn't Always What You See, January 16, 2008
This review is from: Marriage As Advertised (Paperback)
Jon and April, on the surface and on paper, are what every couple aspire to be. They have worked hard, purchased a lovely home, have two kids and attend church regularly, together. They appear to have the perfect life. Marriage as Advertised by Jerome J. McCarthy is an inside look at how many couples are more concerned about how their marriages look, rather than how they are. There is a scene in the book where they are arguing on the way to church, but as soon as they step from the car their demeanors and actions change. I found that fascinating. Readers will see how easy it is to become disconnected due to lack of communication and misunderstanding.

Jon is a construction worker who has dreams of owning his own real estate development company but feels tied to what he does by an obligation to his family. Mostly, he feels April does not appreciate him and is never satisfied with what he does. April is employed at a bank and earning a decent living but feels her needs are not being met by her husband and plans to leave him are always in the back of her mind. She thinks that having more materially would make her happier. This couple does a great deal of thinking about what they want, but very little sharing with the other. Because they are unable to talk and are so focused on appearing happy, they make bad choices that could ruin their marriage. Marriage as Advertised is a narrative-driven view of marriage, family and choices.

I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy descriptive novels that read like real life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blueprint, May 20, 2008
This review is from: Marriage As Advertised (Paperback)
`Marriage As Advertised' written by Jerome J. McCarthy provides an insight into a marriage where both parties are dejected and uncertain if their 9 years is salvageable. Jon and April Carter have the ideal marriage, or so people on the outside believe. When both husband and wife begin to spend time with others, they both find themselves in persuasive situations. Will Jon and April choose to step into something new, or take the time needed to reassess their relationship?

`Marriage As Advertise' is a tolerable read fortified with facts, faith, love and strength. I really enjoyed the scriptures, analogies and lessons the author uses from the bible. However, I wasn't really particularly fond of the co-characters, who seemingly don't advance the story in either direction. In some instances, I felt as if the story dragged. Overall, I believe that Jerome J. McCarthy has a very unique recipe for storytelling and readers would be satisfied as well as filled with the word.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, February 26, 2008

This review is from: Marriage As Advertised (Paperback)
I read this book and found it very thought provoking and stimulating. At some points I laughed out loud. The author delves into a relationship and shows how it can be torn apart so easily and he also shows how the relationship can be healed to be stronger than ever before. I think the book was very well written and i can't wait to read what else the author will be releasing.
