By J. Chambers HALL OF FAMETOP 10 REVIEWER on November 8, 2012
Format: Hardcover
In "The Marriage Story," author Dennis Green has penned the story of his marriage to Mary Lou, from that first magic "I love you" moment through the many trials and tribulations that any lasting marriage must endure and overcome to survive. His story is no syrupy Valentine's Day sentiment. It's the real story of his marriage, with the good times and the bad times, including one of the biggest marriage-killers: the gradual drifting away that happens almost without a couple realizing it, until one day, they're like strangers to each other. Fortunately for the Greens, an acquaintance's terminal illness spurred them to rekindle the flames of their marriage.

Two things made the story stand out for me. First, it was written as a narrative poem. Second, the author has violated a cardinal rule for men: Never open up and reveal your true feelings, it's a sign of weakness. That's not true, of course, but in our culture, that's the way we're brought up, and it's not easy for a man to be this open and honest. So kudos to Dennis Green for disregarding the rules and telling this marvelous story of his marriage, and for having the courage to publish it.

Full disclosure: I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review, which I have done to the best of my ability.

My wife and I read THE MARRIAGE STORY together, and were excited to learn that it provided us a needed foundation for discussing our own marriage and the little "course corrections" we now understood we needed and wanted to make.

Dennis Green's book has made us more conscious of our attitudes and expressions to one another, and helps us daily as a reference book on what we need to keep doing to insure our relationship stays fresh.

Young newly weds (or old newly weds)deserve to be given THE MARRIAGE STORY rather than another pot or pan from a registry list. Its benefits will be overwhelmingly greater.

After reading it with my husband of 40 years, I sent the Marriage Story to our daughter and her husband (married 9 yrs, with 3 kids-all under 6 yrs of age!). Her husband has been traveling a great deal for work and income is good, as well as the accumulation of middle class "stuff." He seems to feel the need for accumulating and moving up the corporate ladder ASAP after many dedicated years with the same company. He's a good man and has a candid relationship with us, so he called and told me that his initial response was to wonder why I sent the book and did I think something was wrong, etc.

We didn't say much, just listened and concluded that it was a book that seemed to let couples take what they might need or want from the story if they read it openly.

A few weeks later, we have noticed that his traveling has decreased (he suffered a sports related injury and some changes were forced, then he kept them), next they have reinstated "date night" with what looks to be committed regularity. The end result is that our daughter seems to be calling less, now that he is more plugged into their family's daily life and that really pleases me, especially knowing that a mother of small children can be a lonely job, especially without another invested adult to laugh with and help you keep it in perspective!

Needless to say, it caused me to really like the book for yet another reason! We believe it should come off the shelf and be read at least every 5 years!

The Marriage Story is one that I often hear from couples married for a long time -the starry -eyed dreamers who have drifted far from where they started -careers, children, homemaking, amassing things- slowly displace that early love, which now must exist on fumes & former promises. This book is a succinct reminder of how easily we are consumed by the good or even the better & neglect the best. Only Jesus can give us the undying, always faithful love that our heart's long for, but when we have pledged our life to love another, they deserve our best, to be loved & cherished, even as we desire that from them. This little book is an eye opener & an encouragement. Often, if even one will lay down their pride & make a move toward the other -the other will respond in kind. Will you be the one in your marriage to make the move toward your spouse? You will not regret it! This book would be an excellent gift to give newly marrieds, engaged couples, or marrieds caught in the drift -along with the reminder to re-read it -perhaps monthly- as a check on their level of drift from each other. They may not see the wisdom in it now, but will as the years roll by. Another excellent gift would be Emerson Eggerichs' book "Love & Respect" http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Love+%26+respect

I have never been considered a romantic, by any stretch of the imagination, but I found The Marriage Story to be an eye opening and heart warming experience. Even after 40 years of marriage it helps open my eyes and heart to the fact that I am truly blessed with a marriage and a wife that deserves more. The Marriage Story showed me that I can offer more! What a terrific little "owners manual" for any marriage or relationship.
