5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
I read this book before I got married. This is one of the best marriage book that I have ever read (And I read a lot of them :)). Mostly because my husband's character and personality is similar to Mr. Mayhall (discipline, perfectionist, detail oriented, introvert) while mine is similar to Mrs Mayhall (people oriented, flexible, and unorganized). This book has helped us...

3.0 out of 5 stars Right Idea, Rough Approach
This book presents a lot of good (and great) advice for couples. However, the usage of Bible verses and "God this, God that" can easily be off-putting. A more appropriate title would be "God in Marriage" or something similar. If you're a very religious Christian in need of "refreshing" marriage advice, this is the book for you. Otherwise, skip on by.

This book has helped us to celebrate our differences; appreciate, respect, complement, and learn from each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars MEN ARE NOT LIKE WOMEN!!!!!!!!!, July 9, 1999

I WAS STRUCK BY THE WAY WE ARE DESCRIBED: MEN AS MICROWAVES AND WOMEN AS OVENS. PRETTY MUCH TO THE POINT. HELP ME TO NOT PUSH MY MAN INTO BEING WHAT HE IS NOT. WISH MORE MEN WOULD READ IT SO THEY COULD UNDERSTAND THAT WE WOMEN WORK DIFFERENTLY AND THAT IT IS OKAY AND VERY NORMAL NOT TO BE THE SAME. GOD HAS CREATED US SO WONDERFULLY- WE SHOULD BE COMMITTED TO ENJOYING THOSE DIFFERENCES. JACK AND CAROLE GO A LONG WAY TOWARD HELPING US SEE THESE AND OTHER TRUTHS.

This is a really great book for couples in any stage of marriage. Portions are written from both Carol and Jack's perspective which allows you to understand a situation from both sides of an argument. My husband and I read this for marriage counseling classes before we were married. Both of us benifitted from the information and advice in this book that we go back to time and time again. And have for 12 years!

A bit dated, but a very solid and nicely written reference for young Christians contemplating marriage. The check list of things to discuss before marriage is excellent. We have given this book to many young engaged couples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on marriage, January 19, 2011

I initially read this book as a means of comparing a "pop psychology" book with the research on relationships in my college class. What I found was that it matched up pretty well. I ended up talking too long in my presentation because I was so caught by the stories and ideas of the book.

One of the things that I really appreciated about the book is that both husband and wife have traded off writing chapters of this book and sharing stories from their marriage and from those whom they've helped over the years. Their writing flows very nicely and their stories endears you to the couple.

One turn-off for some would be that the central focal point of their marriage was their devotion first to God. However, I believe that the discussion on the differences among personality types so that you may understand how your spouse sees things to be invaluable to anyone. Also, I'd recommend buying the book simply from the questions that are posted at the end of the book of various things to consider about a potential partner (how they do family, work, free time, communication, etc).

I plan to buy this book as a gift for any friend who is getting married.
