5.0 out of 5 stars Turnaround your marriage
"The Marriage Turnaround" is the kind of book that should be given as wedding presents, engagement gifts, anniversary gifts and to any couple who just wants to improve their relationship. 5.0 out of 5 stars Turnaround your marriage, April 17, 2009
This review is from: The Marriage Turnaround: How Thinking Differently About Your Relationship Can Change Everything (Paperback)
"The Marriage Turnaround" is the kind of book that should be given as wedding presents, engagement gifts, anniversary gifts and to any couple who just wants to improve their relationship. It is easy to read with short chapters that would be good to read together or separate and then discuss. Of course, you will get a lot out of it by reading it alone as well (I know I did). It is full of lots of common sense advice (don't be rude just because you're married, treat your spouse as you would like to be treated, etc...) but it is well put and humorous. If we followed the advice in this book, the divorce rate would drop tremendously. You could say that about a lot of marriage books, but this book is one that I think people would actually read.

While our society has become increasingly self-absorbed, out of touch with its past and future, and totally engulfed in the moment where everyone is seeking decadence and immediate self-gratification-comes a timely and delightful book by Mitch Temple that focuses on saving relationships and marriages.
The author has tailored a faith-based book with real-life stories and biblical solutions that are laced with psychology and common sense to fit the problem of divorce that has plagued our Bible-belt states and our entire nation. Mitch tackles the various myths that infect a marriage and destroy it. The viral infection is engendered by preconceived notions about life, people, and marriage, as well as cognitive distortions that couples carry on like a disease. The Marriage Turnaround attempts to debunk these myths and cleanse the infected mind with biblical and commonsensical recommendations that will help the individuals overcome their erroneous destination.
The book also discusses the most common distortions that couples practice in their daily lives, like "attitude don't really count," "I need to change my spouse," "happiness is everything," "a crisis means we're over," "I shouldn't have to ask," and "marriage is just too hard." Each distortion is covered in one chapter that guides the reader into acquiring practical solutions to overcome these distortions.
The book is designed for the religious in heart to give him or her hope and tools to survive a stormy relationship. However, it tends to over-focus at times on the role of Satan in the creation of these problems, rather than focus on the role of man, choice, and responsibility.
Temple's book informs, instructs, and impels. The quotes that begin each chapter will make you think and ponder your own relationship. The writing style is simple, frank, and clear. It will provide the reader with insight and directions to change him/herself and improve their marriages.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Marriage Tunaround, April 13, 2009
This review is from: The Marriage Turnaround: How Thinking Differently About Your Relationship Can Change Everything (Paperback)
My husband and I have been married 38 years and I wish we would have had this book when we were younger. There is so much wonderful advice on how to turn a bad marriage into a wonderful one.

The author, Mitch Temple, covers so many things that couples address on a daily basis. For instance:
"I need to change my spouse".
"My needs come first"
"A crisis means we're over"
"This marriage is just too hard"

This book is designed to help you build a stronger foundation for your marriage. It is not a quick-fix book, but one that will help you now, as well as in the future. I recommend this book highly!

Marriage Turnaround was a great read for those in any type of serious relationship; whether you are married or not. If you are serious about your partner and truly concerned about their needs, this book will help you to be open, fair and honest with yourself. There will need to be changes on both parts however it may just need to start with you.

I have recommended this book to my friends couple therapy group.

Great read!

This book has been an answer to prayer. My wife and I were on the verge of
seperation if not worse. After seeing the movie Fireproof, I went to Amazon.com to buy the book, when it gave me the option or suggestion of this book. Something inside me told me to get this book as well. Let me tell you it has paid off, not only are we still together but by reading this book and by the grace of the Almighty God, I found a renewed live for my wife. The Marriage Turnaround is worth the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Your Marriage Can Survive Just About Anything, December 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Since my husband and I survived a real hurricane on our honeymoon I've always said that we can survive just about any storm after that. After being married over 15 years that has proven to be true. But mostly I'd say we have stayed married because I have diligently read tons of marriage books on a consistent basis. Sometimes my husband reads them too.

With that said, I think "The Marriage Turnaround" is essential reading. This book deals with annoying habits, indifference, withdrawal, blaming games, criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling, anger and retaliation. Sometimes a marriage can seem a lot more like a war zone than a loving relationship.

Mitch Temple gives many practical solutions for temporary problems. And I say temporary because many times you will outgrow some parts of marital disharmony. In this book Mitch Temple tells stories of struggling couples who have figured out how to make their marriage work. He has literally witnessed miracles! He shows how destructive myths can harm your relationship and what to do about it. He especially talks about the myth that says: "a crisis means we're over." Sometimes if you can hang on long enough the crisis does pass.

While this book is fairly serious at times there are also moments that made me laugh out loud. The conversational style and the intriguing stories kept me glued to my Kindle for hours on end. The only thing I didn't agree with him on was about how people treat their pets like humans. My cats are definitely like my children and they give me more love than any human ever has. Animals can teach us a lot about loving unconditionally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Marriage Book I have read, October 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Marriage Turnaround: How Thinking Differently About Your Relationship Can Change Everything (Paperback)
I have always felt that I had a "good" marriage. Sure we had up and down times, but overall I felt things were going pretty well. However, the last year has been difficult for us and I was feeling less respect and love for my wife and that scared me. I wanted to (and she reluctantly agreed to) go to counseling. That revealed many areas in our relationship that were "broken" and I was pretty shocked to hear how my wife felt about things. She basically didn't love me anymore and didn't want to prolong the inevitable. I was panicked. I started to read as many marriage books as I could get my hands on. I saw an individual counselor to help with some issues and dealing with the rejection I felt. I changed behaviors. I tried many different things. The one thing that helped me the most (other than prayer) was this book. It is by far the best of the marriage books that I read. It is relatively short and easy to read, but makes it's points clearly and concisely. I even was able to get my wife to read it, and she has begun making changes in her attitudes and behaviors that are helping our relationship. We still have some issues, but I think we are on the road to recovery. I couldn't recommend this book more highly. I think it would be a good book for any couple and should be standard reading for anyone who is thinking of having a long term relationship. It is Christian based in it's sensibilities, but the messages and points he makes are useful for anyone even if they do not share that belief.

If you have been married 1 year or 30 years or are even just thinking about getting married. Get this book. It will change the way you think about your relationships.

100% the best marriage book I have ever read and I have read plenty! I am a Christian Counselor and have 30+ marriage books that I have reviewed and would put them all aside and recommend this one. The only thing I add is that it tells you like it is and you must be ready to hear it or it will not do your marriage any good.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVERY marriage needs help., March 11, 2010

EVERY marriage needs help.

This is the best, most practical, easy-read book on helping to make a marriage better. The chapter titled "It's Okay to be Rude--We're married!" is worth the price of the book. We know better than to be rude to our marriage partners, but too often we fail. Many of us working to have a decent marriage know much of what is in this book, but it's good to be reminded. Every person who is married or has a friend who is married should read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marriage in the daily trenches, October 12, 2009
This review is from: The Marriage Turnaround: How Thinking Differently About Your Relationship Can Change Everything (Paperback)
Having worked with the author and seeing him work with couples I know first-hand of his commitment to building healthy marriages. This book was formed in the crucible of personal experience and professional training. The book is transparent and insightful, filled with practical advice on how to build a vital marriage in the trenches of daily living. While a quick and easy read it challenges readers to reframe their traditional approaches, crush the myths, and adopt a new way of acting. Suggest that couples read with the husband reading and highlighting in blue and the wife reading and highlighting in pink and then discuss together the areas that are purple. The effort and discussion will deliver what the book title suggests: A Marriage Turnaround!
