This review is from: Married...with Children: Fan Favorites (DVD)
Sony began releasing a series of "Fan Favourites" television DVDs last year, just in time for the Christmas season. Nicely priced for a stocking-stuffer or for those looking for a "sampler" before jumping into complete season sets, I can understand the logic behind the idea, although the title "Fan Favourites" is baffling. I strongly doubt that Sony ever approached "fans" to vote for their "favourites", because the DVDs are duplicated from those used in the complete season sets. In this case, Disc 1 from the first season of MARRIED WITH CHILDREN.

MARRIED WITH CHILDREN is a show you either love or hate. It came along during a period in the 80's when audiences wanted something a little more gritty and realistic in their sitcom families. Along with "Roseanne", MARRIED WITH CHILDREN pushed away sugar and sweetness to tackle more "untidy" issues on sitcom television.

Blue-collar shoe salesman Al Bundy (Ed O'Neil), his layabout wife Peg (Katey Sagal) and their children Bud (David Faustino) and Kelly (Christina Applegate) proudly fly the flag for "White Trash", whilst their conservative neighbours Steve (David Garrison) and Marcy (Amanda Bearse) often get sucked into their schemes. This DVD presents the first eight episodes from the first season.

Episodes:

"Married with Children" (Pilot) - Peg forces Al to forfeit his coveted baseball game to have dinner with their neighbours Steve and Marcy.

"Thinergy" - Hoping to rekindle Al's flame, Peg takes Marcy's advice and embarks on a crash diet.

"Sixteen Years and What Do You Get?" - After Peg runs his credit card to the max, Al is forced to show up at his own wedding anniversary empty-handed.

"But I Didn't Shoot the Deputy" - Mistaking it for a burglar, Al accidentally shoots his neighbour's watchdog.

"Have You Driven a Ford Lately?" - After restoring a vintage Mustang, Al discovers that the backseat isn't the only thing "hot" about his cherry ride...

"Whose Room Is It Anyway?" - When Steve and Marcy decide to add on to their house, Al and Peg have them squabbling over what kind of room they'll decide to create.

"Al Loses His Cherry" - When Peg insists that Al attend her cousin's wedding, he protests and spends the evening with his swinging single co-worker.

"Peggy Sue Got Work" - When Al refuses to buy Peg a VCR, Marcy convinces her to get a job and buy one for herself.

"Married...Without Children" - When Al and Peg go away for a romantic weekend, Steve and Marcy agree to keep an eye on the kids.

Those looking for a more varied selection of episodes should instead seek out Sony's two earlier volumes of "Most Outrageous Episodes" - Married with Children, Vol. 1 - The Most Outrageous Episodes and Married with Children, Vol. 2 - The Most Outrageous Episodes.
