I first saw this program about 15 years ago, have seen it several times since, and still regard it as one of my favorite mysteries. I believe this movie was made for British TV and it has the flavor of the PBS "Mystery" series offerings. It features a young Anthony Hopkins playing a upper middle class London barrister who is just approaching middle age, beginning to tire of his career -- and his wife. The wife is equally dissatisfied with her own life. The mystery proceeds from there. Very highly recommended for fans of British mysteries and detective programs (Prime Suspect, Touching Evil, Second Sight, Forgotten, etc.)

This movie didn't turn out to be what I thought it was going to be...and I'll not spoil it for you...but it is a very good, well done movie. Hopkins is his fantastic self. Lots of food for thought in this movie. Not just throw away lines. Watch or buy this movie. Unsung good movie.

Anthony Hopkins is wonderful, with his many-faceted portayal of a tortured lawyer with wife problems.

Other than his superb performance, this production is a big yawn.

3.0 out of 5 stars Anthony Hopkins gives a wonderful performance, April 5, 2011
This review is from: A Married Man (DVD)
John Strictland (Anthony Hopkins) has just turned forty and is consumed with dissatisfaction. He has a family and a successful career, but he's bored with it all and thinks he's doomed to a life of misery. He meets and falls in love with a young heiress and moves toward divorcing his wife for her, but then fate steps in and changes everything.

This 1983 BBC miniseries is rather predictable and low on drama but Anthony Hopkins is so convincing, so mesmerizing as the tortured husband that one watches just to see and hear him. His flawless acting stands out all the more because his costars are terrible. Ciaran Madden, as his wife, is supposed to be dull but she goes beyond that to forgettable, and Lise Hilboldt, as his lover, is amateurish and recites her lines without conviction; there is no romantic chemistry between them. The story plods along at a snail's pace, full of unnecessary characters and subplots and would be quite dull if not for Hopkins' masterful portrayal. His John Strictland is thoughtful and complicated, reading and reflecting upon Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Illyich" and seeing many sad similarities between that title character and himself.

Fans of Anthony Hopkins will appreciate his work here but the story itself is uninspired.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Married Man - Anthony Hopkins, January 4, 2011
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Married Man (DVD)
An excellent and highly engaging film with one of the finest, if not the finest, actor within his craft. Hopkin's understanding of, and ability for, the art of nuance brings this film above and beyond the merely melodramatic (and usual fare of married life) to the philosophical level and it's elements of pretense, self-denial and the bittersweet. I highly recommend it to anyone weary of the mindless, stupid and propagandistic entertainment put out by Hollywood and cable TV and enacted by C-rated talent.
