Book Description

April 22, 2003
Widowed four years ago, London antiques dealer Lucy Fellowes was plunged into single motherhood with two growing boys. Since then, she’s had little time—or inclination—to think straight, much less fall in love again.

Now, she’s been offered an incredible dream house in the country. Of course, accepting means having to cope with her domineering mother-in-law, her husband’s wacky family, and all their assorted scandals. But suddenly, none of it matters. Because she’s met HIM. His name is Charles; he’s a famous television writer, gorgeous, witty, charming, and very, very attracted to her. And, he’s married. Well, a woman can’t have everything. Or can she?

In this delightfully sexy, amusing romp through mishap and desire, Catherine Alliott hits the shores of America with a romantic comedy of manners and unexpected passion—in which her plucky heroine discovers that despite her best intentions, love has a plan all its own!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Take a recently widowed young woman, her two rambunctious sons, and a clan of aristocratic in-laws; add a luxurious country home, a handsome TV screenwriter, and a reemerging interest in the opposite sex, and you have the makings of either a romantic affair or a ruinous assignation. Although Lucy Fellowes tries to adjust following the death of her husband, she finds that life on her own is no picnic. The in-laws are meddlesome; the home is far from hip, happenin' London; and the gorgeous writer happens to be married. While valiantly attempting to maintain some independence in the face of her in-laws' manipulative domination, Lucy also struggles with the moral dilemma of a forbidden attraction versus her overwhelming loneliness. Making her U.S. debut, bestselling British author Alliott humorously, yet heartwarmingly, depicts a Bridget Jonesian heroine doing her best to fit in with a privileged nobility who would be more comfortable at Fawlty Towers than Buckingham Palace. American fans of British fiction will delight in the discovery of an engaging new author. Carol Haggas

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining, original book., June 23, 2006
This review is from: A Married Man (Paperback)
This is the first Catherine Alliott book I read and I liked it enough so that I'm going to read her book The Wedding Day next. A Married Man is about a character that is so human and makes so many mistakes that most women should be able to relate to her. The story wasn't as predictable as I thought it would be and it held my interest until the very last page, with interesting characters and an intriguing storyline. It's not the typical Chick Lit fare that I go for, which means funnier books like those by Sophie Kinsella, Meg Cabot and Laura Wolf, but it was still really good. If I could've rated it 4.5 stars, I would've but it wasn't quite a 5 star book so I had to give it 4.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great balls of fire...until the end, September 6, 2003

This review is from: A Married Man (Paperback)
I opened this book and could not put it down. I thoroughly enjoy many "Brit chick lit" authors and was delighted by both the writing and the story line. Catherine Alliott did an excellent job of creating believable characters and unexpected plot twists.

That said, the ending fell apart like a three-layer cake I tried to bake in college that I forgot to let cool. It was as if the author was rushing to finish the book and make sure everyone ended up happy. I only wish she'd taken more time to delve into her characters and really think about what would have been more believable. A good-looking, never-been-married millionaire just waiting for the character to notice? Oh, please...real life is not like that.

So what started out as a delightful romp turned into to a Harlequinesque mess. If I'd have wanted a romance novel with a trite ending I would have purchased one in advance.

Because of the ending, this book should be marketed as a romance. It's a shame because Catherine Alliot is a real talent.

Hopefully she'll do better next time and not serve up the usual "no woman is complete without a man" pap. Her character Lucy certainly deserves better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Will She Or Won't She?, September 28, 2005

This review is from: A Married Man (Paperback)
This book reminds me of a screwball comedy with a woman (Lucy) who is warm and delightful, but always finding herself in compromising positions. Well, almost, because the author takes Lucy up to the brink many times, only to pull her back from the edge before she leaps. The reader is kept guessing and wondering, will she or won't she cross that line with her married man? Her mother-in-law is a character you love to hate, and by the end of the book, you realize all was not as it seemed. The ending will make you cheer.
