Solid Follow-up from Nathanial Portis, April 28, 2007
This review is from: Married To A Married Man (Paperback)
Overall, this is a mostly interesting read. Even though the pacing is a little uneven at times, it generally has a good tone and pace to it. The story is compelling and puts enough detail and perspective into the characters and the story to add that "breath of fresh air" feel to a seemingly old story.
This is not to say the book doesn't have it's downfalls. The first half of the book often has a tendency to go on and on. Understandably, you have to set up the characters and situations. Even in parts where the story drags, you understand more of the book as you read further in. Also, watch for subtle clues and hints throughout the book.
Readers will be able to see pieces of themselves in many of the characters in the story. The way it's written, you can almost visualize it happening as if it could occur tomorrow. For the intended audience, this style is a double-edged sword as it really couldn't just happen tomorrow. However, the basic story is one that many can identify with as variations of this story border on commonplace in today's world.
As a whole, the book does a good job of holding your interest, especially in the second half when events are building and you can feel the tension mounting. Ultimately, the ending of the story is a satisfying payoff which leaves things open enough to revisit the characters.
While some of the writing is uneven here, it is a solid effort from Portis. MARRIED is written to crossover as it has a universal reliability and strong lead characters. With a new twist on an age-old story, Portis proves that with the right idea there's always a new story to tell on a seemingly old subject.
Definitely pick this one up. Gives an interesting insight of things to come from Portis.

A Kept Woman, July 15, 2007
This review is from: Married To A Married Man (Paperback)
A Kept Woman
After sixteen years of marriage Dean and Irene Reeves can both testify that their marriage has become dull and lifeless. With their daughter Tamara away at Spellman College, one would think there would be more time TOGETHER. Instead Irene finds herself alone with a drink in her hand most evenings and Dean still at the office working countless hours.
Granted, Dean is the big CEO of Sitrop Corporation a struggling company he put back on the map.
Attractive single mother Kayla Brown, a marketing director at Baker and Anderson Consulting firm is bought in to investigate a company that Sitrop is looking to invest millions of dollars into. Dean and Kayla attraction blossom's into an affair lasting a decade.
Now Kayla becomes a kept woman being lavished on by her wealthy married boss, while Dean's wife sits home and continues to look the other way not really knowing what to do.
Find out what happens when being the "mistress" starts to take its toll and the spiral downwards causes serious issues for everyone involved...leading to the old saying; what goes around comes around!
Author Nathanial Porits serves up his version to an all too common story. Money, power, sex and a doomed relationship fuel this story line with jealousy and betrayal rearing its ugly head but never really fully explored.
What was the real deal with Simon, Dean's chief financial officer and good friend?
Mr. Porits did a good job setting the ground work with the main characters as the story spans over the years. The character Dean was portrayed as a very private man but I felt the need to know more of his personal feelings, he seemed heartless after the baby situation. Both Kayla and Irene had strong personalities so it was interesting to read the dynamics between the two of them.
I enjoyed the read and loved the ending.

Unhappily Ever After..., May 15, 2007
This review is from: Married To A Married Man (Paperback)
Married To A Married Man by Nathaniel Portis
Nathaniel Portis' Married to a Married Man introduces you to Kayla Brown; sexy, attractive and just graduated from Howard University. She is a single mother with the world at her fingertips and she cannot wait to begin to use what she has to get what she wants. In her mind, she is in control and control is what will quickly get her to the top of the corporate ladder.
Kayla quickly becomes enamored with the power and intrigue of Dean Reeves, a wealthy and married businessman who runs one of the most powerful companies in Texas. She sees the executive's passes as a way to the top, not realizing that she will be stepping into a whirlwind of misery and regret that will span a decade.
Kayla's forbidden relationship takes a toll not only on her body, but her mind. And now ten years older, she tires of being number two and is ready to pull out all the stops to secure that number one spot. Dean, however, has other plans, setting into motion a series of events that not even Kayla can control.
Nathanial Portis gives us a glimpse into a world that is all too common. The book was a fast-paced read that held my attention and the cliff-hanger ending will leave fans wanting more of this talented writer. I was very impressed with how Mr. Portis captured the emotion of all the characters and relayed them in a way that I could relate to them. Readers will definitely enjoy this quick and refreshing read.
