4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Follow-up from Nathanial Portis, April 28, 2007
This review is from: Married To A Married Man (Paperback)
Overall, this is a mostly interesting read. Even though the pacing is a little uneven at times, it generally has a good tone and pace to it. The story is compelling and puts enough detail and perspective into the characters and the story to add that "breath of fresh air" feel to a seemingly old story.

This is not to say the book doesn't have it's downfalls. The first half of the book often has a tendency to go on and on. Understandably, you have to set up the characters and situations. Even in parts where the story drags, you understand more of the book as you read further in. Also, watch for subtle clues and hints throughout the book.

Readers will be able to see pieces of themselves in many of the characters in the story. The way it's written, you can almost visualize it happening as if it could occur tomorrow. For the intended audience, this style is a double-edged sword as it really couldn't just happen tomorrow. However, the basic story is one that many can identify with as variations of this story border on commonplace in today's world.

As a whole, the book does a good job of holding your interest, especially in the second half when events are building and you can feel the tension mounting. Ultimately, the ending of the story is a satisfying payoff which leaves things open enough to revisit the characters.

While some of the writing is uneven here, it is a solid effort from Portis. MARRIED is written to crossover as it has a universal reliability and strong lead characters. With a new twist on an age-old story, Portis proves that with the right idea there's always a new story to tell on a seemingly old subject.

Definitely pick this one up. Gives an interesting insight of things to come from Portis.

A Kept Woman

After sixteen years of marriage Dean and Irene Reeves can both testify that their marriage has become dull and lifeless. With their daughter Tamara away at Spellman College, one would think there would be more time TOGETHER. Instead Irene finds herself alone with a drink in her hand most evenings and Dean still at the office working countless hours.
Granted, Dean is the big CEO of Sitrop Corporation a struggling company he put back on the map.

Attractive single mother Kayla Brown, a marketing director at Baker and Anderson Consulting firm is bought in to investigate a company that Sitrop is looking to invest millions of dollars into. Dean and Kayla attraction blossom's into an affair lasting a decade.

Now Kayla becomes a kept woman being lavished on by her wealthy married boss, while Dean's wife sits home and continues to look the other way not really knowing what to do.

Find out what happens when being the "mistress" starts to take its toll and the spiral downwards causes serious issues for everyone involved...leading to the old saying; what goes around comes around!

Author Nathanial Porits serves up his version to an all too common story. Money, power, sex and a doomed relationship fuel this story line with jealousy and betrayal rearing its ugly head but never really fully explored.
What was the real deal with Simon, Dean's chief financial officer and good friend?
Mr. Porits did a good job setting the ground work with the main characters as the story spans over the years. The character Dean was portrayed as a very private man but I felt the need to know more of his personal feelings, he seemed heartless after the baby situation. Both Kayla and Irene had strong personalities so it was interesting to read the dynamics between the two of them.

I enjoyed the read and loved the ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unhappily Ever After..., May 15, 2007
This review is from: Married To A Married Man (Paperback)
Married To A Married Man by Nathaniel Portis

Nathaniel Portis' Married to a Married Man introduces you to Kayla Brown; sexy, attractive and just graduated from Howard University. She is a single mother with the world at her fingertips and she cannot wait to begin to use what she has to get what she wants. In her mind, she is in control and control is what will quickly get her to the top of the corporate ladder.

Kayla quickly becomes enamored with the power and intrigue of Dean Reeves, a wealthy and married businessman who runs one of the most powerful companies in Texas. She sees the executive's passes as a way to the top, not realizing that she will be stepping into a whirlwind of misery and regret that will span a decade.

Kayla's forbidden relationship takes a toll not only on her body, but her mind. And now ten years older, she tires of being number two and is ready to pull out all the stops to secure that number one spot. Dean, however, has other plans, setting into motion a series of events that not even Kayla can control.

Nathanial Portis gives us a glimpse into a world that is all too common. The book was a fast-paced read that held my attention and the cliff-hanger ending will leave fans wanting more of this talented writer. I was very impressed with how Mr. Portis captured the emotion of all the characters and relayed them in a way that I could relate to them. Readers will definitely enjoy this quick and refreshing read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lesson well learned.!, May 16, 2009
This review is from: Married To A Married Man (Paperback)
I read the galley to this book so i can't really comment on the flow of the story or editing since gallies are not perfect.

What i can tell you is that Mr. Portis has an intersting story about women falling for married men. Kayla was young, ambitious very attractive when an older Dean came sniffing around. Like most rich men he had to have such a beautiful treasure at any cost.

Kayla basically put her life on hold and assumed the role as mistress monday-thursday since fri-sunday was reserved for his family back in Dallas. Dean used his career as CEO of Sitcorp as a reason for not working where his family resided even though he could have.

Ten years of being the mistress finally took a toll on Kayla even though she knew Dean had no intententions of ever leaving his wife. His wife, Irene, had other ways of filling the void with young escorts while their daughter, Tamara, was in school having plenty of sex with her new boyfriend.

Since i didn't get to read the actual book. i can only assume that the editing and flow of the story were addressed. In the galley there was a lot of gaps and telling instead of showing which messed with the consistency of the story.i wanted to read what was going on with Irene instead of getting a chapter here and there every now and again. The overall concept of the story was something that'll make anyone cheating with a married person reconsider. i'm looking forward to the sequel that has to be in the works judging from the ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's cheaper to keep her, January 18, 2009
This review is from: Married To A Married Man (Paperback)
We follow the relationship between Kayla Brown a young woman who is a single mother, sexy, smart and making a life for her and her son Jamal. As fate would have she meets her knight in shining armor Dean Reeves after collapsing at a gym. So you ask what the problem is well the problem is he is married to Irene and has a daughter Tamara. We follow this relationship for 10 years with all the difficulties included, with a great following of what is going on with Dean and his wife's life also.

I found this book to be very slow. I struggled to get thru this book. I mean the 10 year affair does not start until around page 120 something. I think Nathanial over established the characters. This book drags on and on. I was glad he kicked it up a notched towards the end of the book that made me reading it worthwhile. At times, I wanted slap Kayla silly, at other times I felt compassion for her. Dean had the best of both worlds a wife who would never leave him. A girlfriend, who tried to be understanding to the fact that he was married, I wanted to hate Dean but could not forget that he only got away with what these two women let him get away with. I keep reading to see how this love triangle was going to turn out. Had to see who was going to be the first to leave of they were going to continue to co-exist. I will say I was pleasantly surprised by the turn of events in the ending.

I will try this author again as Nathanial had a good premise and a good story. I just hope the next time he picks up the pace.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good reason not to have an affair!, June 5, 2008
By
This review is from: Married To A Married Man (Paperback)
Married to a Married Man was a very interesting read. If I was not a Christian and believed that affairs were sinful, this book would definately be a good reason not to have an affair, regardless if you are a man or a woman, in the end, someone gets hurt. I was very shocked by the ending and look forward to a sequal.

4.0 out of 5 stars AAMBC Book Reviews, August 7, 2008
This review is from: Married To A Married Man (Paperback)
Phenomenal, a page turner within itself, and you want believe the ending. Once you get past the story developing at the beginning Nathanial Portis creates a story about Kayla a newly college graduate who moves to a large city and meets Dean Reeves. Now of course a powerful rich millionaire like himself is married, but that didn't stop Kayla and Dean from starting a love affair. Like any other mistress Kayla believed she could make Dean leave his wife, but she would become his ten year fool, hanging on to the dream of making him all hers. Married to a Married Man is not only believable it is relatable to those men and women who choose to have a on going affair believing that the ending will be a fairy tale. The ending of this love story will shock you, make you questions their motives, and lastly leave you stunned with unanswered questions. Four and a half stars to Mr. Portis a true story teller. I wouldn't wait to read this one.
