This review is from: Married Men (Mass Market Paperback)
Married Men is one of the funniest, most interesting and captivating novels that I've read in a long time. While it dealt with serious issues that evolve over time in relationships, Carl Weber managed to wield his pen like a professional swordsmen and stab humor throughout.

Just when you think the unexpected won't happen it does. The main character Kyle is a smart, savvy, but typical looking brother. He has a wonderful family or so it appears until dormant feelings begin to emerge causing him to take a second look at his wife in a way that he never thought possible for him. Allen Jackson, the Momma's boy is hooked up with a trifling trick of a woman named Rose. She manages to turn Allen's life upside down with her bag of tricks including using a pregnancy to ensure permanent residence as his lifelong partner. However, things don't always turn out the way we script them. Wil Duncan is married to mouth-almighty, tongue ever-lasting, Diane. Diane is like a tornado spinning out of control causing turbulence between Wil and his boys. At one point they pull the cruelest trick on him to teach him a lesson, but how far is too far when it comes to a practical joke? Last we have Jay, the playa, playa and pretty boy of the group. In the beginning it's hard to tell that Jay is even involved in a relationship, much less married the way he manages to stumble from one woman to the next as if in a drunken stupor. But we often reap what we sow, and Jay is no exception to the rule!

This quartet is tighter than tight and have a history together that is almost infallible. Then again, all relationships have their breaking points. It's interesting to see how this story wraps up and it's definitely not your typical ending.

The drama and theatrics of this group will keep you up in to the wee hours of the morning. This is admittedly the first time that I was unable to put a novel down. This book is a page turner from the beginning to the very end.

Carl, hats off to you on a superb novel!

3.0 out of 5 stars carl, you're two for two, October 26, 2001
This review is from: Married Men (Mass Market Paperback)
of course, i read lookin for love for luv before this, so i had a pretty good idea about his writing. carl can create good characters and can write dialogue that will have you laughing out loud. however alot of this book was predictable; it's not a deep book, i could see the plot twists from a mile away, and yet i continued to read because the book was fun. i've read the same kind of story dozens of times before, and yet, carl made it fun. allen was the weakest character in the book; he had no backbone, he was a mama's boy, plus, he was -----whipped. i wanted to grab this man and tell him to get his head out of his duffel bag. you're gonna see a man eating your food, groping your woman, and then believe her when she tells you that's her cousin ? no one can be that clueless ! i had a problem with kyle having issues with with his marriage just because lisa was white. he didn't have it in the beginning, so why would've it have bothered him now ? i wouldn't even bother dating outside my race if i wasn't man enough to deal with the problems that come with it...i was very suprised after all that, that lisa and kyle got back together. i did like the fact that carl made one of his principal characters a bbw; he made diane beautiful and desirable; he also gave her enough attitude , that when upset would have made (person) scared . rose is foul with a capital " F." totally despicable; and deals more dirt than a gardener. it's not as a great book, but there was more that i liked than hated about it....

5.0 out of 5 stars A DRAMA-filled Masterpiece............!!!!, December 27, 2001
This review is from: Married Men (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first time reading something from this author and I must say I was very impressed! This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride. I caught myself laughing out loud, crying and talking to the characters. I felt like I was a fly on the wall as Carl Weber took me into the lives of four best friends. Kyle was the peacemaker of the four. He was married to a white woman, but at times he felt embarrassed being with her. Wil was married to a woman who couldn't keep a secret to save her life. Wil's friends confided in him with their deepest secrets and thoughts. He confided in his wife Diane and she made her business to tell everyone which caused more drama than a little! Allen(momma's boy) was the weaker of the bunch he let his money-hungry girlfriend take advantage of him time after time. I found myself screaming at him more than any of the characters to stop being a fool! His girlfriend Rose was nothing more than a SCANDALOUS and triflin golddigger who did whatever it took to keep her pockets fat. Last you have Jay who was my favorite character because his life was like an episode of the Real World mixed with a little Ricki Lake and topped with sprinkles of the Jerry Springer show! Jay was married, but by all the ladies he had in and out of his life one couldn't tell. Lying was natural to Jay and he seem to like living his life on the edge. These four guys really had a strong bond between them because no matter what happen they ALWAYS was there for each other! Married Men was a PAGE TURNER and I highly recommend all book lovers read it!

Carl Weber is now my favorite male author! Once you expereincce Carl Weber you too will agree that he is best male author out today! He has literary magic that flows smoothly and keeps you wanting more! I can hardly wait for his next novel Baby Mama Drama, I read a sample chapter of it at the end of Married Men and I can tell already it is going to be OFF THE CHAIN! Carl Weber, you have a new fan and I am on my way to pick up your first novel Lookin For Luv. Married Men easily gets five stars and deserves more!!!! This one is MUST READ especially for women who want a peek inside what goes on in a man's mind!

5.0 out of 5 stars WITHOUT A DOUBT, A MUST-READ FOR ANYONE IN A RELATIONSHIP, October 9, 2001
By
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Married Men (Mass Market Paperback)
In a word, Married Men is "EXCELLENT." The four main characters (Wil, Allen, Kyle, and Jay) are so well developed that you feel like they live down the street or work with you. Wil is happily married but ends up the victim of a sick practical joke when his wife finds some shady evidence and kicks him out of the house. Jay, an eternal playboy, cheats on his wife Kendra for sport but ends up being turned out by a college coed. Kyle is struggling to deal with the complications of an interracial marriage after realizing that his wife does not truly comprehend the plight of the black male. Allen is torn between his overprotective mother and a gold-digging girlfriend determined to get the ring, which she eventually does.

All four of these men think they have it made but quickly discover that women have a say-so in relationships also. I feel this book is important because it will teach a lot of men that love is indeed a two-way street and while they often assume that they are running things, that is not even the case. I love to see intelligent, successful black males portrayed in novels. That is something rarely seen until recent years. I am doubly glad to see black male authors creating them because that makes them all the more realistic.

Just like Lookin' For Luv, Married Men is an entertaining, humorous, enlightening novel, only better. Carl Weber is fine-tuning his craft and it is almost scary to think about how awesome his next book, Baby Momma Drama, will be. All I know is that I will be the first one in line to get a copy. Married Men is a must-read and one of my top picks of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Loved It!!, October 1, 2001

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Married Men (Mass Market Paperback)
As a female reader, I recommend this as must-read novel to explore the male psyche---granted it's fictional, but it was entertaining to read "tales of drama and relationships" from the male perspective. I didn't know what to expect based on the title and the cover. I'd heard good things about Mr. Weber, but never read any of his works. This was a book club choice and I wasn't disappointed! It kept my interest to the very end. The author has well defined, fully developed story line for each character in which each has a lesson/message that must be told. Kyle, Wil, Allen and Jay are lifetime, "true-blue, tight-like-glue" friends and are a likeable group of guys that the reader feels comfortable with regardless of their situation. There's Jay-the playa, Kyle-the successful business man with a Caucasian wife, Allen-the nice guy/"Momma's Boy" with the gold digger girlfriend, and Wil - "Mr Huxtable", devoted family man. They all have some serious family/life issues that are dealt with resulting in some VERY surprising outcomes. The story moves at a good pace with lots of laughs and other surprises laden throughout the book. I enjoyed the author's writing style, the plot, and the presentation of the story. I'm going to purchase his first novel and will look forward to reading his next.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Prince of Drama is back!, August 18, 2001
This review is from: Married Men (Mass Market Paperback)
Ladies and Gentleman, Carl Weber has done it again. If you liked Lookin For Luv, you will love Married Men. Every page had me talkin to myself and laughing out loud. I identified with each male character. I even related to some of the women characters, with the exception of that trifling Rose. IF your feeling down and need a pick me upper, definitely purchase Married Men. You will laugh your blues away.

Congrats!!! to Mr. Weber on a wonderful and outstanding novel. What I read is that no marraige is perfect, every relationship has it's ups and downs. Face it-this is the real world. I felt sorry for Allen and Kenya the most. Here Allen was trying to please 2 women, Rose only wanted his cash, she did not love him. I am glad that her ring wasn't worth any money, and his mother wanted a child so bad before she passed. I knew even before I got to the end of the book that Rose and Ray were up to no good. To think she could be so cold hearted and callous to kill her own mother in law to recieve an insurance check, it was not justified. Jay was a downright D-O-G, Kenya got played the whole marraige and I thought that she deserved better. Diane was too nosey and she should have minded her own business, then on another note Wil told his wife to much about his friends pesonal business. In a way I was glad to see them get back together. Now as far as Kyle and Lisa, Lisa should have stuck by her husband. Kyle did over react to the situation and he did not consider the affect that he had over his daughters. Don't let me forget Tracy, common sense would have told any woman that if you are constantly renting rooms for a few hours of pleasure-than sista gal he is MARRIED!!!. I loved the book, I loved the drama, I loved the fact that Mr. Weber showed that both men and women have flaws, it was not all on the man, but the women in this story had some issues as well. All in all, this book was excellent.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious w/much drama, September 4, 2001
This review is from: Married Men (Mass Market Paperback)
An unpredictable mixture of humor, romance, and drama, Married Men is an icy yet realistic depiction of societies' fickle attitude toward marriage and fidelity. Full of melodrama, Married Men centers around four successful black men with a bond of friendship that spans some twenty-five years. Sassy, brash, and alluring are just a few adjectives that come to mind when describing the characters and situations in Married Men.

A myriad of hilarious mishaps and perils make this novel an easy, fast read that will keep you eagerly turning pages. We are privy to the men's perspective of fidelity, love, trust, and women. Carl Weber cleverly shows us how each man deals with the difficulties and rewards of marriage and fatherhood.

The novel is extremely fast paced, full of wit and anguish. At every page break there is drama on top of drama unfolding. Before these brazen brothers resolve one issue, another calamity erupts. The story is very well thought out and executed. The friendship between the four guys is extremely well developed and worthy of envy. Full of drama, trauma, and deceptions, Married Men is a whirlwind of vivid havoc, and you'll be right there like a fly on the wall.

For the length of time that it takes you to complete this novel, Jay, Kyle, Will, and Allen will become a part of your life. They'll say stupid things, and make dastardly mistakes, but when the book is closed, you'll be wishing that those blundering brothers were still around. You'll want to give them advice, steer them the right way, celebrate with them, and pat them on the back. Even after you've closed this novel, it'll be hard to get these four characters and their auspicious perils out of your mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look Out Married Men. Your Story Has Finally Been Told., September 4, 2001
This review is from: Married Men (Mass Market Paperback)
Carl really "put his foot" in this novel about four male friends and their rollercoaster relationships with their wives. One is dealing with a wife who doesn't understand his plight as a black man, one is dealing with his inability to think with his larger head, one is dealing with a wife who thinks he is guilty until proven innocent, and one is torn between a gold-digger and an overprotective mother. Add all that up and you have a realistic, entertaining, hilarious sophomore novel that will have you up all night glued to the pages to find out what happens next. Carl Weber is a wonderful storyteller, a master of character development, and any avid reader of AA literature couldn't possibly go wrong by picking up Married Men. It is a must-read.

This review is from: Married Men (Mass Market Paperback)
Talk about role reversal. This book sums it up. Just like how women have problems, men have them and sometimes even worse. There was some much drama and miscommunication going on that it didn't make any sense. But I'm glad to finally see someone write a book about male drama for a change. This was like lifetime network for men. 3 1/2 stars
