From USA Today bestselling author Julianne MacLean comes a passionate and emotional tale of a most unexpected love…

MARRIED BY MIDNIGHT: A Pembroke Palace Novel of approximately 220 print pages

For seven years, Lord Garrett Sinclair-- the ruggedly handsome illegitimate son of the Duke of Pembroke--has been traveling abroad with no intention of ever returning home to Pembroke Palace… until his father commands that he must marry by Christmas in order to thwart a family curse or lose his inheritance forever. Haunted by a tragic accident that has hardened his soul, Garrett entrusts his brothers to seek out a bride who will agree to a marriage in name only. Her reward? A sizable share of his inheritance--payable immediately after the wedding night….
Lady Anne Douglas has been ruined by scandal and disowned by her father. Facing a life of poverty and spinsterhood, she leaps at the generous terms of the marriage contract to ensure her independence. But the charade of a two-week engagement proves more of a challenge than either anticipated when they cannot resist the intoxicating lure of the marriage bed. Anne knows they will part ways after the wedding. Will she dare risk her heart for two weeks of pleasure in the arms of an irresistible rogue? Or will her surrender become her undoing after a most unexpected turn of events mere hours before the wedding?

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice story but not much spark September 9, 2012
By Gigi
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I just finished reading this book and it was the first one by the author that I've read. Illegitimate prodigal son returns to save family fortune by wedding a bride picked out for him by his older brothers. Father has gone mad but not before stipulating in his will that all of his sons must be wed before Christmas or lose the family fortune. Although I liked the characters, the writing seemed a bit cliched and stilted. I was unfortunately not left with the need to rush to my computer keyboard and buy another book in the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Eye rolling April 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was looking for a light read when I started this. I liked the premise. But I could barely force myself to finish. I was CONSTANTLY rolling my eyes at their behavior and their prose. The problem was the characters jumped into bed basically immediately, which in the time and place they were living is completely unbelievable. Especially as casually as they did. This is especially unbelievable for the female character. And I just didn't buy into their romance at all. It felt very shallow. Also, for two people getting married for the sole reason of claiming an inheritance, why would they risk waiting until the very last possible second to actually marry rather than doing it earlier? They hung out for two weeks prior to the scheduled ceremony. It was an arranged marriage; it's not like they had to really get to know each other. It made no sense to me. Nor did the legalities of the will (it wasn't so easy back then to just will away an estate), the last minute drama (I won't spoil it), the brothers' laid back reaction to said drama, the mother's side plot, and a million other things. It wasn't the events themselves so much as the character's behavior throughout; it was just so unbelievable that I couldn't enjoy the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read July 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Anne and Garrett are getting married. The trouble is, they haven't met yet. On a particularly cold December evening, they must quickly become acquainted and convince Garrett's mad father they're deeply in love in order to stave off a curse the old man is convinced will ruin them all.

They both have their reasons for entering into such a scheme. For all intents and purposes, it should be easy - meet, marry, and part ways each with a fortune and freedom at their disposal. Things take a turn once the sparks fly between them, and keeping one another at arm's length to stay focused on the end goal becomes as clouded as the old Duke's memory. Before long, the mystery of their pasts unravels allowing them to replace heartache and pain with something else - something stronger than any physical bond.

Julianne MacLean breathes life into rich characters whose chemistry can set the page on fire. The setting is vivid and the reader is swept away right from the first page. Loved this book and look forward to many more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance with a touch of mystery July 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a quick, engaging read that will leave you wanting more. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was pleasantly surprised to find it had a hint of mystery woven into the plot. The heroine was strong and independent (which I like) and the hero was handsome and rugged. All in all, a great continuation of the series. I would highly recommend it to others.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough excitement December 8, 2012
By Judy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Was it love or sex? Were they truly in love or were they just a balm for each other? Maclean was too quick to throw in the word love. By the time the reader felt that Garret and Anne had a reason to be in love, they had already been pages before.

There was not much interest generated for me to read the other books in this series and I struggled to get through the first part. The book got better nearing the end, but not enough for me to want to read again or to recommend. Garret and Anne were both likable characters who had some dimension to them; their story was just slow and unexciting.

I've read a number of Maclean novels, but this is not one to rave about.

I will be up front and declare that I may be a bit odd, in that I believe romance novels do not need to have the hero and heroine having sex before marriage, and apparently only falling in love because of all the mind-blowing sex that they do have, before marriage. Oh, and let me add, girl comes to castle to marry hero three weeks later, having never even met him, and after week one, is suddenly having sex with him and falling in love with him.

Add to this a stupid sub-plot line with a duke talking to the ghost of a long-dead monk who somehow knows everything that has happened in the 7 years that the hero has been gone from the family, when no one else does, and this truly makes for a disappointing novel. I stopped reading after the third before the wedding sex scene.

I only read free Kindle books, so I can at least not be disappointed about wasting money on this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars nice short read April 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a very well written entertaining short book. There was little mystery you knew where the story was going before it got there however it was interesting enough to keep me reading. I would give it a pg 13 rate if your looking for something steamy this is not it. The dialog between the all the charactors was good and they were all like able.

I have read better and worse.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Match the Era October 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Other reviewers have talked about what this story is. Basically the 4th son of a Duke needs to be married by Christmas, well more like Christmas Eve. A woman is chosen for this farce of a marriage and the charade begins.....

What I liked about this book was that it was a girly, cute story, boy meets girl, boy likes girl, that sort of thing. Now the what I really didn't like, the story is set in an era where ladies had to be chaperoned, physical contact was set to bare minimal as in hold the guy's arm while you dance or take a walk about the room. But Ms. MacLean deviates from that era and tells a story of romance where the characters are physically intimate before marriage, after all its going to happen. There's too much freedom to live a life of "sin" yet its frowned upon and Anne has lived with the consequences of that choice......I bought this book hoping for a clean historical story, what I got wasn't it.

A final one falls in love that fast....
