It is a rock and roll given that 1960s British artists were influenced by 1950's American blues and R&B artists. But surprising on Marriot of '76 is how much these roots hold in the more commercial sphere of streamlined, 1970's rock. This is a hard rock album, not an R&B one, with all the pumped volume and guitar heroics that marked the decade. Marriot, however, puts Memphis style female backup singers through this album. You'd think this would clutter the sound, but it only adds grit and genuineness to the album--it is slick, but gritty, and works as both rock and R&B, old and new. Dynamite party record.

I have always been a big Steve Marriot fan. I had this one (or heard it before; I can't remember) a long time ago. It has been some time since this was reissued. I bought it thinking that maybe I could hear some good old post Humble Pie licks. If you like Steve and the work he compiled over the years, you won't be disapointed. Steve actually plays lead on this ablum. The guitar work is a little over bearing at points cause of the way it was recorded, not any deficit on Marriots part. The Blackberrys return for some cuts, and the bands Steve assembled are top notch. The horn work on the American side adds a dimension that I have not heard before. There does seem to be a little stress in Steves' voice at times because of the crap he was going through. I saw him in 1980 in a very small dance hall on 1st Avenue in Seattle. I liked him then and if you feel like I do about this guy then buy it.

Too bad Marriott killed himself. This guy was a player. "East Side Struttin'" was, and remains one of my all time favourite songs. The British side (back when there were LPs) is far stronger than the US side--rawer, edgier. This album is worth every penny.
