Amanda's vocals are so earthy and pure that you just want to try and find all the music you can from her.....The band's sound is clean and isn't overpowering....A great blend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh, moving, surprising, and interesting to listen to!, September 25, 1999

This CD is listened to over and over again. I am impressed with the musicianship, and especially the vocals. The passion is only rivaled by a Billy Myers type of voice. I can't get enough of this album, and wish the band was still recording. Would also like to see them live!!!!

This 1996 album's main claim to fame is that it was the soundtrack for a quirky, little-seen, pre `Sex and the City' Sarah Jessica Parker film called, `If Lucy Fell'. Like the film, the album has an offbeat charm. Unlike the film, it takes a few listens to realize that. It is a bit of a wolf in sheep's clothing - something that sounds lacklustre at first, but proves to have real resonance.

New York's Marry Me Jane, like many bands, centres around its lead singer, Amanda Kravat. At first glance, she has a thin, reedy voice. But after a few spins, you start to realize that she conveys an awful lot of emotion and conviction with it. Combined with the band's unique lyrical take on things, she manages to make this eponymous debut both memorable and one that stands apart from many of the other girl-fronted alterno-rock bands of the mid to late 90s.

Things get off to a blistering start with `Twenty One', seemingly about the frustration of existing in the shadow of an extroverted friend. It is an infectious rock song and one that the band never quite matches on the rest of the set. However, a number of quieter tracks reveal Kravat's (and the band's) abilities in crafting songs that are quite touching. As good as, but in complete contrast to the outrage of the first track, `You Didn't Kiss Me' is a sad, beautifully tender song built around wanting to return an overcoat to an ex for whom you still carry a flame. `Athena', which might be about an alcoholic friend, and `Lousy Lullaby', which is full of palpable loss for a departed lover, are not far behind. `Bad Loser' is another excellent stomper, while `Misunderstood', `Ordinary', `Who's Leaving Who', and `Positive' are all excellent middle of the road rockers.

There is something beautiful about this record, which is easy to miss if you cross it off as ordinary and slight on the first listen, as many probably have. It's an easy, if regrettable, mistake. The beauty is found somewhere in the wistfulness of the lyrics, the understated production and the band's delivery. But in no small way, it is also in the overwhelming sense of regret that Kravat conveys in her vocal performance. These songs exist at the moment of crying. They are little unassuming masterpieces that deserved a much greater audience than they ever got.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to a band that should have stuck it out!, October 9, 2006

Marry Me Jane's self-titled debut also serves as the soundtrack to the 90's indie romantic comedy "If Lucy Fell." The tracks show a glimpse of a new and dynamic band with a lot of promise, who sadly broke up far before their time. With a blend of folk, rock, and R&B, their sound is difficult to pinpoint into a specific genre of music, harkening back to the pre-MTV days when music had more substance and less flash.

Stand out tracks include "Who's Leaving Who," "Athena," and "Positive," which all showcase Amanda Kravat's ethereal and folksy vocals, and the pop-infused theme to Lucy - "I'm Not 21," which just encourages the listener to get up and move. I purchased the CD for a single track and find that I love the entire CD - it's in constant rotation on my CD player. If you are looking for something different - check out Marry Me Jane and you'll embark on a musical journey that you won't want to return from!

Also recommended - Kravat's solo effort - "Wrong All Day" featuring "Green," the haunting track from the movie "Fall."

This album is pop music the way it should be played. With the touching voice of lead singer Amanda Kravat and wonderful lyrics, this soundtrack to `If Lucy Fell` is one of the best albums I've heard in a while. Songs like `You Didn't Kiss Me`, and `Twenty-One` are the highlights of this wonderful pop album. I highly reccomend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars MARRY ME JANE - A Stunning Little Gem of a CD, March 27, 2007
This review is from: Marry Me Jane (Audio CD)
Marry ME JANE, the self-titled CD with 10 songs from the movie "If Lucy Fell" is such a simple work that it is quite easy to overlook it, but that would be a great loss. "Marry Me Jane" is a wonderful understated work, filled with some of the most original sounds to come out on CD in years. Part alternative/ part folk rock/part pop/part adult contemporary with a little ethnic beat and hint of metal thrown in for good measure, it is no wonder that "Marry Me Jane" confounds radio execs, since it refuses to be pigeon-holed neatly into one succinct category of music. "Marry Me Jane" is an amazing blend of sounds, and the lead singer, Amanda Kravat, has a chameleon-esque and totally enchanting voice that effortlessly raps itself around any style she wishes to choose. She can be hard on songs like "Twentyone" and "Who's Leaving Who", strong and confident on "Misunderstood" and then downright waif-like and delicate on my favorite cut, "You Didn't Kiss Me". While there are a few wek tracks on this CD ("Ordinary" for instance seems to lack the energy necessary to cary it off), the excellent work far outweighs the few missteps. If you enjoy groups like "10,000 Maniacs" and "Bare Naked Ladies", you'll want to give "MARRY ME JANE" a listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, January 28, 2002
This review is from: Marry Me Jane (Audio CD)
This album is strong from the begining. It's nearly a total new experience for those who hasn't listened the great voice of Kravat before. Since the sweet voice from Positive to the rage of Tabitha and the strenth in who is leaving who?.
The lyrics are simple but interesting, using well-known ideas to explain feelings that we all had during the liftime.
It's something you can't miss.
