5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful fun!
This is a wonderfully delicious read, sheer fun from beginning to end. So what if the "Mom" of the title is a real pain in the butt? So what if her adult children are three totally neurotic, self-obsessed New Yorkers? So what if none of them have the exact idea of what Christmas is all about? It's delightful fun to watch them interact in the month before...

I certainly didn't enjoy this as much as I did Bestseller or Young Wives Club, but it was still an ok read. This is a story about 3 siblings who are not very impressed that their widowed mum is leaving Florida and coming to live with them in NY. She is loud, brash, aggressive, strong-minded and always sticks her nose into places where they don't belong. The three decide...

4.0 out of 5 stars Laughter from beginning to end!, May 27, 2002

Cori (Charlottesville, VA) - See all my reviews
This book was one of a kind. It kept me interested the WHOLE time. There was never a point where I got bored with the story line, or the characters, although they were a little undeveloped. The plot was somewhat unrealistic, pretty corny, and the characters were slightly crazy. The characters just seemed like they had maybe two descriptions and that was it. Although I have to give it to the author, it was HILARIOUS! It is about three grown up kids who have lived on their own and have begun to produce a life for themselves. They discover that good old widowed mom wants to make a surprise visit, and permanent stay in New York, with the kids. Of course the kids do not want their insane, and nosey mother in their lives anymore, so they kids set up Operation Geezer Quest, to marry mom off. Their focus is an old, rich, and probably insane man for her to marry. Then hopefully through the process, they can marry her off fast enough that her new hubby can give the kids more then plenty of money to set them straight for their entire lives! Throughout the many men the mother dates, the family becomes closer and closer together. The one thing that disappointed me about this book was the ending. It seemed so abrupt and totally expected from the very start. Yet, it is a great little slice of heaven when you just want a book to read to have a break from reality!

The three decide to set up Operation Geezer Quest, a plan to get their mum to marry and old, rich man so she can be looked after..well away from them. Basically, the story goes on about how this mission is accomplished but at the same time bringing the family closer together.

It is quite a funny book and it is short so you can finish it in one sitting. It is entertaining and cleverly written but it is nowhere near as good as other Goldsmith's books - still a good book to read if you have a few hours to kill.

So what if her adult children are three totally neurotic, self-obsessed New Yorkers? So what if none of them have the exact idea of what Christmas is all about? It's delightful fun to watch them interact in the month before Christmas when "Mom" decides she's tired of Florida and decides she wants to move north to be with the kids. None of them can imagine living within 1000 miles of her, of course. It's fun to watch their crazed scheme of marrying her off to the first available old man they can find. It's wickedly funny and very easy to read and enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fun and light read, January 12, 2004
This review is from: Marrying Mom (Hardcover)
This is not Goldsmith's best book ~~ but it's really fun and cute. It's a light read ~~ something that is humourous and quick ~~ perfect reading for when you don't want to think or concentrate on heavy reading.

Three siblings, Bruce, Sig, and Sharon are horrorified that their mother, Phyllis is moving back to New York from Florida. They didn't want their mom back in their lives ~~ meddling and interfering. Each one of them are facing personal and professional woes in their lives ~~ Sharon is trapped in an unhappy marriage with an unemployed husband and two children. Bruce cannot get his gay greeting card business off the ground. Sig is losing clients in her stockbroking business and is contemplating selling her house and prized emerald ring. Then Phyllis decides to move back and that is when chaos hit. Desperate to get their mom off their hands, the siblings decided to marry mom off to a rich old geezer.

And there were surprises and revelations for each of them throughout the hilarious and funny novel. It's really cute and Olivia did a great job portraying senior citizens who still have sexual desires and act on them.

It's a cute book and while not the greatest, I wouldn't recommend this one to the trash heap either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Success again, January 22, 2001

Marrying Mom took me all of one day to read. I just could not put it down. The characters were so real and the plot was just hysterical. If your stuck in the house or feeling blue, this is most definitely the book to get you laughing again.

Olivia, keep up the good work!

1.0 out of 5 stars I was skimming it towards the end..., March 2, 2000

There wasn't a single character in this book that I honestly liked and wanted to root for. I got the feeling the author dashed this book off over a long weekend. Didn't she write the First Wive's Club? THAT book was funny and had real characters, not boring cardboard cutouts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Candidate for Movie-of-the-Week, June 29, 1998
A quick, easy book that reads like a made-for-TV movie. Corny dialogue, but a fun story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very funny book, December 6, 1997
By A Customer
I enjoyed this fun little book. A serious reader could be finished with it in a sitting or two. The characters and dialogue are truly entertaining. Another similar book from a few years back is Murdering Mr. Monty, I think its by Judith Viorst. Same silly premise. I told my mom about Operation Geezer Quest and she couldn't wait to read the book. Imagine your daughter named Susan who changes it to Sigourney, another daughter married to the slob of the century and your gay son in the dirty greeting card business, all with financial troubles. Unfortunately, all the stories turn out way too perfect at the end. There needed to be someone miserable and unhappy, maybe with hope, but miserable just the same, so that we could all identify even more. Thanks for the fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good start - lame finish, June 2, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Marrying Mom (Audio Cassette)
I started this book thinking I was really going to like it. The first half was entertaining with some genuinely funny lines. But the last half was so absurd that I was greatly disappointed. Without revealing too much, let's just say that the boundless good fortune of every single character (both major and minor) left me wondering why the author couldn't have thrown in a dash of reality for a better mix

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a great book., June 1, 2011
This book is fabulous. Made me laugh out loud and shake my head, kept me engaged from start to finish. Olivia Goldsmith had such a talent for creating characters and stories that pulled you into their world. If you need a book to brighten your day, buy this one.
