5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Classic, February 22, 2009
This review is from: The Mars Underground (Audio CD)
This is astonishing that the manufacturer has "discontinued" this CD! It was composed as the soundtrack for the documentary, "The Mars Underground"(which has been shown on The Science Channel and probably other channels that show science-related programs) on Robert Zubrin's plans for a manned expedition to Mars and ultimately to colonize and perhaps "terra-form" the planet.

The composer, James Michael Dooley, displays themes reminiscent of some of the works of Philip Glass, but in a style that is ultimately his own.

I found it to be hauntingly beautiful and quite capable of standing on its own, without reference to the documentary for which it was written. If it is not reissued, viewers of the documentary will still be able to enjoy it for the dramatic and inspirational themes that it uses to enhance the visual and narrative effects of the program.

But if you do see the documentary, you will definately want the soundtrack CD!

I did buy from Ocule films, viewed and listened to the documentary The Mars Underground Pioneers For The Next World.DVD.

The documentary was absolutely fantastic. So well done both visually and with really nice background music. Getting to Mars via The Mars Direct and Semi Direct methods is discussed and shown. Many flying spacecraft, habs, presidents talking about getting into space and the space shuttle program discussed. This is a DVD that should be shown to every later grade school, all high school students and college students in their science classes. No math is discussed, however brain stimulating visual experience and scientific talk is used but not super technical. You don't need any degrees or past Mars knowledge to love this movie documentary.

Robert Zubrin and Baker scientists as well as others do a fantastic job explaining the benefits to mankind of going to Mars. Later building a colony is shown and terraforming Mars. Absolutely eye and mind boggling.

Part of the background music was a little eerie and surreal. The other part you can actually feel you are going into space. Good "space music".I'm buying the music CD later. Ill review it on Amazon.

I can highly recommend The Mars Underground documentary DVD. First buy the book The Case For Mars ( 5 stars) by Robert Zubrin to get you up to speed on the Mars direct approach. Then buy the documentary The Mars Underground also 5 stars) .

P.S. Jan 24, 2011. Bought and am listening to the Mars Underground CD on my Bose Wave radio. Wonderful music 5 stars. Different orchestra music than I'm used to. I still like The Planets... Mars Bringer of War by the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra better ( see my review 5 stars). Can't knock the Mars Underground CD. To me its more spacecraft approaching Mars type of music. Try listening to both Cds. Both 5 stars.
