Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-9-- This introduction to the physical characteristics of Mars includes scientific discoveries, the scientists who made them, and the controversies often surrounding them. Beginning with the mythological name (associated with war and bloodshed because of the planet's red color), the text continues through humankind's present information based on unmanned landings and observations, detailing the history of that knowledge. The black-and-white photographs are relatively small and do not compare well to those in Patricia Lauber's Journey to the Planets (Crown, 1982). Nevertheless, the level of textual detail outweighs the dark photographs. Especially interesting is the description of the lack of tectonic plates on Mars. The chapters are well organized and flow naturally; there is even one on the fictional depictions of life on Mars. Although the text is wordy and sometimes becomes bogged down with all the names of the scientists, the book is well indexed and contains such useful matter as a comparison of the physical characteristics of Earth and Mars; the Soviet and U. S. missions to that planet and what they accomplished; fiction and nonfiction reading lists; and a science-fiction film list. --Frances E. Millhouser, Reston Regional Library, VA
