5.0 out of 5 stars Debut of a brilliant traditional country singer, July 12, 2003
This review is from: Marsha Thornton (Audio CD)
Marsha was good enough to be a major country star. Unfortunately, her brand of country music (ideal for the sixties and seventies) was too traditional for 1990, when this album was released. Produced by the late great Owen Bradley (of Patsy Cline fame), this was her debut album, after which there was just one more album. Since then, she appears to have sunk without trace.

The songs here include the oldies Deep water (Bob Wills) and Jealous heart (Kitty Wells) but perhaps the standout here is one of the original songs, A bottle of wine and Patsy Cline. Apart from its quality, this reflective song caused a certain amusement at the time. I remember one radio station asking what other song titles could be made by rhyming drinks with country singers in this way.

Marsha had a classic country voice but was clearly not willing to follow the pop-country path to stardom. I note that, as I write this, the only used copy listed has a quoted price higher than one might expect from an obscure singer. This suggests that there are enough people out there who know just how good a singer Marsha was.

If you enjoy country music of the sixties and seventies, you will love this album. The playing time is short (half an hour), but the quality makes up for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A voice that should be popular today!!!, May 8, 2008

Well, I'm now listening to this beautiful, true country singing voice in her debut release!! Just received the CD and can't believe how more pleasant she is on the ears than any present-day, so-called country singers! She needs to return to the studio with an agent that knows the business, and then proceed to kick those other 'new artists' off the CMA stage! I know it's a long-shot and today's voices don't even require to be on-key (or have true tembre/depth of voice), but I pray she returns in some fashion. Another similar country artist, compared with Patsy, that did go further and continues to perform to this-day on the Opry is Mandy Barnett. Again, she didn't make the big-time music scene, but her voice is also a heavenly gift to behold!!!! And, just think if these two ever joined forces for a duet set..........OH MY GOD!!!!! But, we must live with popularity in this music world, and enjoy these great singers in OUR own world!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Bottle of Wine & Marsha Thornton", October 14, 2007

Excellent (& rare) album of retro-country music produced by the legendary Owen Bradley. The music is very Patsy Cline sounding, but Marsha's voice is reminiscent of a young Connie Smith. The single, "A Bottle Of Wine & Patsy Cline" is a tribute to Patsy & her tunes "Crazy" & "I Fall To Pieces." It's an excellent song! There are 10 songs on the album, & they leave you wanting more once the CD ends. Aside from "A Bottle Of Wine & Patsy Cline", I also like "Deep Water", "Jealous Heart", "Climb The Walls (And Walk The Floor)", & "Don't Tell Me What To Do."

5.0 out of 5 stars REAL COUNTRY, NOT MAKESHIFT BUBBLEGUM LIKE TODAY!!, August 3, 2007

This was Marsha's debut and what a debut it was. Produced by the incomparable Owen Bradley, every cut is a gem! Thornton pleases in every way and its such a shame that country music (if you can call it that today) doesn't recognize this style. This is beautiful music, reminiscent of Patsy, Loretta, and Kitty and produced by the man who produced all of them. This is a timeless offering from a young lady who unfortunately was in the right place at the wrong time. Nevertheless, this CD stands as a testament to Real Country Music, not the makeshift bubblegum of Martina, Reba, Faith, Trisha or Shania today!!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE TRACK LISTING FOR THORNTON'S BRILLIANT DEBUT ALBUM., May 7, 2010
This review is from: Marsha Thornton (Audio CD)
This, Marsha Thornton's 1990 debut album is pure quality and brilliance.

There's something to be said about being in the right place at the right time,

and alas that was not the case for this great album.

Thornton music didn't get the air play it deserved.

But that doesn't make the contents of this album any less substantial, or less enjoyable.

This is the sound of classic country music, with a strong Patsy Cline influence,

emersed in the richness of an Owen Bradly production.

The track listing:

1. "Deep water".

2. "A bottle of wine and Patsy Cline".

3. "The other shoe".

4. "Jealous heart".

5. "Wasn't it you".

6. "Climb the walls (and walk the floor)".

7. "The grass is greener".

8. "Next time around".

9. "Love me".

10. "Don't tell me what to do".

Marsha Thornton has a smooth country voice,

it's as good as any superstar here in this collection.

"A bottle of wine and Patsy Cline" has everything it takes to be a major hit,

if only it would have had the right exposure.

One other song from this album charted, "Deep water".

Music doesn't get any better then this.

Thornton's vocal abilities are superb,

the melodies and lyrics here are genius.

Every song on this c.d. has the quality of a hit,

and Thornton's delivery is timeless.

This is the quality and class of country music that you never get tired of.

Amazon dosen't seem to have sound bits at this time,

but you can rely on this album to be the well done in every way,

as is always the case with an Owen Bradly production.

This is top of the line melodic country music.

1990 M.C.A. Records. An EXCELLENT c.d.!

This review is from: Marsha Thornton (Audio Cassette)
I purchased this cassette for the song Bottle of Wine & Patsy Cline.

I was searching for another artist that had also sung this song but, couldn't find it. Although I have never heard Marsha Thorton sing the song I absolutely enjoyed her version of this song she has a great voice. I did find that she is very talented & I actually LOVE the whole cassette all the songs are great.

I am very pleased with my purchase from start to finish. The web site was really easy to purchase from and I highly recommend it. The fast service & delivery I received was very satisfying.

If you are a Patsy Cline Fan I recommend this purchase & this website for purchases.

A big Fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Found You At Last, October 25, 2009

This review is from: Marsha Thornton (Audio CD)
I searched for this music for almost 20 years. A DJ said he was going to play " A Bottle of Wine and Patsy Cline" on the radio once a long time ago and I managed to get it on tape, but I wasn't able to get the name of the singer. I called the station a few times but wasn't able to get through and no one I knew had heard it. I played the tape til it wore out and then forgot about it. Recectly someone suggested I google it and I found the original videos on You Tube. Then I Amazoned it and bought both CDs. I play at least one of them every day. It's my "getting ready for work music". It is really a shame that this great singer didn't get more exposure to the world. She is real country music. To me she does'nt sound like Patsy Cline, but has her own unique sound that I just love. I'm not sure what that garbage they play now is, but "it ain't country". I only gave this 5 stars because that was the highest they offer. She deserves at least 10. I've turned a lot of people on to Marsha and they love her. Wish she would make some more CDs. If you like real country music, give Marsha a try. YOU WON'T BE SORRY!!!!!! I PROMISE!!!!!

This little lady is something else. She sounds so much like Patsy Cline on so many of her songs. So sad she only had 2 albums, I think she could have gone alot farther. Must have for all you fans of good ol' country music from the heart. Sure glad I found it.
