From Publishers Weekly
This virtual encyclopedia of facts and strategies for securing wealth is packed with commonsense advice on topics ranging from investing in securities to buying a home, a car or a computer to stretching vacation dollars abroad. With minute details amplified by charts and graphs, Loeb, an award-winning financial journalist, explains why one must set goals early, saving for children's college and planning for retirement. A 45-year-old married person with a household income of $50,000 wishing to retire at 62 could need $1.3 million. Work benefits could amount to that after 30 years. But it's apt to be up to the individual to put most of that together, and this book tells how. Loeb spells out how much will be needed at every stage of life and how to obtain it. He helps set a budget, hire a financial planner, cut costs and make wills. On the topic of taxes, he tells how not to pay more than you must.

From Library Journal
Loeb, a former managing editor for both Money and Fortune magazines, is an experienced financial writer with sound ideas that nonetheless can be found in most other personal finance primers. Some of his suggestions are undramatic, such as his recommendations to save money, invest in mutual funds, and make a will. Others are quite useful, such as his review of the numerous options for investments and advice on reducing expenses. Loeb, who also serves as reader, sees growth stocks as a good investment; however, he classifies them as "safe" only if the investor can afford to take risks. Other topics Loeb examines are college expenses, taxes, aging parents, divorce, and retirement. He concludes with a list of 52 financial initiatives that, if followed week by week, will strengthen one's economic health. This package is useful as a basic introduction to personal finance and is recommended for most libraries.?Mark Guyer, Stark Cty. Dist. Lib., Canton, Ohio
