See latest update on 09/10/2014 for justification of one star.

My ferret absolutely loves this alligator. After a minute or two investigating the outside, she climbed in and I've barely seen her since. After waiting for almost 20 minutes for her to come out, I took a peek and she was curled up ready to go to sleep. When I awoke in the morning, I came downstairs to see that she had come out, but only to pull her toys and food bowl right next to the mouth so she can eat and play without having to come out! I would highly recommend this item to anyone with a ferret.

UPDATE: 09/01/2010 - To this day, the alligator remains my ferret's favorite bed / toy. Although she has 3 other beds to choose from, most mornings I find her sleeping in the alligator. And after the addition of a second ferret to my family, I was very surprised to see that not only do they both fit inside, they both choose to sleep in it together. It's very durable despite them using it as a toy in addition to a bed, I can't find a single stitch that has come loose, including the bell inside.

UPDATE: 06/20/2012 - After using up the last of my previous order, I re-ordered more of these alligators. Unfortunately, the quality has dropped significantly. The shell of the alligator is much thinner than with previous ones, and there is no longer a bell inside. The shell is so thin that the alligator will collapse on itself from being folded in the packaging for so long, and I usually find it laying on it's side. I doubt I will be ordering any more of these as there are many other alternatives that are not so cheap. Lowering my rating from a 5 to a 3.

Got this for our rat boys and they totally ignored it for about two days then everything changed. First thing we noticed was somebody ripped one of the alligators pupils off, guess the boys didn't like being stared at 24 hours a day? Next thing we knew the alligator was hopping around the cage squeaking. Turns out the boys had started wrestling inside the alligator and either there was a small hole in the lining at the back of his throat or they made one. Somehow they managed to both squeeze through the tiny hole and were then wrestling in the lining between the alligator's skin and his mouth. This was great fun to watch, but the boys started to panic when they couldn't get back out and we had to cut another hole in the lining to let them out. I don't think any pet could recreate that chaos, but please check the lining to see if there is a hole that will be a problem for your little ones until you know they are safe with the gator.
Later that night, the boys went to town on the alligator and tore him a new one, literally. They made a hole in the alligators tail. Watching the rats crawl in the alligator's mouth, out his butt then running around and crawling back into the mouth was worth the price of the alligator. Now they have totally ripped out all the inner lining and foam reducing the alligator to just the outer shell.
Even as a shell the gator still looks good and they boys definitely still enjoy hanging out inside the gator. From reading the reviews it seems in the previous model the mouth stayed open and the one we received definitely did not. We put a cardboard tube to prop the mouth open, but the rats actually seemed to enjoy burrowing through the closed mouth so for them the current style works just fine.

Purchased as a sleeping bed for my ferret. Did not want her to be cold during the day when we turn the heat down. Enough room for my ferret and a medium towel inside for additional nesting comfort.

Great quality, material seems light enough to wash, but thick enough to be insulative.

Tip: I use two large "clamp style" paperclips to secure the bed from getting into the litter box. One near the mouth, the other on the tail. Just clip from outside the bars, such that the clip is removed from outside the cage.

I purchased this product so my ferrets would have a place to hide and play while they are in their cage. They love it! It has a little ball with a bell in it on the inside. I also like that it is machine washable. I will probably buy them another one when this one gets too raggedy.

Especially dangerous for ferrets that are chewers! My ferrets had a great time with this but found it to be dangerous after only a few days. One of my ferrets chewed on the liner and became trapped in between the liner and the outer shell. Great idea but poor quality. The liner should be better secured so the ferrets can not pull it inside out. Most importantly, it is made of terrible fabric that is too thin. Plus, according to the tag it can not even be put in the wash, only wiped off. It would probably dissolve in the wash.I usually love the Marshall Ferret products but the quality seems to have changed (for the worse) and I am really disappointed.

My mom bought this for her 'grand-ferret' aka my albino ferret dre and he LOVES it. It does collapse sorta but my ferret likes it. Its almost like a built in blanket. Also, we 'play' attack the gator onto dre and he gets soo excited pouncing on it and he loves it too bits. We have had it for almost 3 years now and it has stood up to multiple washes and even little 'accidents'. Pretty much would feel terrible about taking his gator away no matter how bad it got but luckily its held up very well. On trips, we put the gator in his carrier and he LOVES that too. Should mention our ferret isn't caged so I don't know how this would work for caged ferrets.
