Product Description

The DSL15H is an all-valve, 15 Watt head that delivers great tone in a compact ‘small box’ design. Powered by two 6V6 power valves with four ECC83s in the preamp, the DSL15H might be small, but its guts are as serious as its big brother, the DSL100H. With foot switchable classic/ultra gain channels (footswitch supplied), deep switch to boost lower-end chunk, and on the back panel a pentode/triode switch for maximum flexibility (15 Watt to 7.5 Watt), the DSL15H perfectly combines performance, versatility and value for money.

So, I wanted a high gain amp option, and couldn't decide on the Orange Dark Terror, or the Marshall DSL15H, so I bought both. I love both. In my early guitar years, I mainly played Peavey and Fender amps and my first guitar was a Strat - and, those amps suited my needs. They sounded good enough for garage band stuff. Anyway, this 15 watt amp is seemingly the loudest of all my 15 watters. Note: 15 tube watts is 76% as powerful/loud as a 50 watt head (volume-wise). 15 tube watts is generally too loud for home use. However, I like it loud - and, when she's not home, I like to shake the walls! This amp does that, and well. The gain/distortion is amazing and pure Marshall (think hot rodded JCM800-JCM900 range). I have found my sweet spots and am finding I only need the gain on 3 or so (Les Paul, and PRS guitars are what I'm using on this rig). Note: beyond level 3, the gain begins face melting up to 5-6, and after it becomes muddy. The clean channel is very nice and warm (very bass-y and dynamic). It breaks up for classic Zepplin-ish tones. I use this amp with a 8 ohm Celestion H30, 1X12 Jet City Cab (I took out the Eminence supplied with the cab). This speaker is super-efficient and sounds incredible. I like the tone shift button disengaged (adds scoop), and the deep button depressed (more bass!). I also dial back the treble to 4 ish as the highs are very/too shrilly above this. I can go on and on, but if you want to stop messing around with pedals and other companies trying to make high gain amps, check this amp out. It delivers hot Marshall tone akin to 80's hard rock and 80's metal (Van Halen, Ratt, Dokken etc). I don't play much modern drop tuning stuff, but this amp will get you there too.Read more ›

This is a great sounding amp. In the right hands it is very capable of achieving many of the great tones that Marshall is known for from classic Zeppelin tones to Pantera and beyond. Yes I realize Dime was a Randall and Krank man but, the amount of gain available is insane and more than ample to achieve those tones. I have used it at half power for bedroom levels and at full power live and it easily will get up over the loudest drummer. That being said Marshall in my opinion made a mistake in not including an effects loop. I would have happily paid a little extra as that would have made this amp king over anything in its price range and even some more expensive. I have found a delay that works reasonably well through the front so I'm still very happy with the purchase but an effects loop would probably seal the deal for many who might be on the fence about purchasing this unit. All in all a great product and it seems sturdy and well made despite not coming out of the UK.

I didn't get this on Amazon but got mine used for a substantial savings over new. I've been a fender guy for s long time and have several vintage fender amps. I was looking for a Marshall and this got good reviews. This thing sounds fantastic paired with my Les Paul. I really like the classic gain channel which goes from really nice cleans that are very different from fender cleans to a great classic rock crunch. The higher gain channel at first had more gain than I really wanted. I swapped out the cheapy stock Marshall preamp tubes with some vintage Tung Sols and that made a big difference - now the higher gain channel picks up where the classic channel leaves off and is much more usable. I love this amp and would highly recommend it. Many have complained that it doesn't have an effects loop but that doesn't bother me much - my pedal board sounds fine right into the front end.

The negatives about this amp have been overstated. No, there is no reverb and there is no effects loop, and yes, the red channel has a little too much gain. I think people that see that automatically give the amp a bad review.
I love this amp. I'm not a metalhead, but I will occasionally play Metallica or Black Sabbath riffs through it on the red channel. The red Channel (ultra gain) is super-distorted. It gives a very modern metal sound when it is turned up. If you have the red channel on about 3, it sounds very good, like that classic Marshall tone everyone talks about.
The clean channel (Classic Gain) is very nice. The sound is very articulate and clean. There is a lot of headroom, and it will only barely start to break up if you dime the gain on that channel. It's perfect for pedals. Sounds great playing everything from country to blues to indie rock.
Construction of the head is top-notch. Yes, it's made in Vietnam. So are your shoes, more than likely, and you trust your feet and body to those on a daily basis. There's nothing wrong with the construction or country of origin.
The head is lightweight and can get very loud when it's at full power. I use it with a Marshall 4x12 A cab with Celestions and it sounds great. Plenty of bass and treble.
I play a variety of guitars through it. Bright single coils from Fender, Gibson p90 and humbucker-equipped guitars. Of course, the higher output humbuckers will make the amp distort more quickly, but that's the sound you want. The Fender single coils (tele, strat, jazzmaster, and Jaguar) all sound amazing on the clean channel. With pedals, they all rock.
I recommend this amp if you want something small and lightweight that can push a 4x12. It's probably not powerful enough for a packed club and a really loud drummer with no PA- that is something to consider (although, it's very loud... much louder than my Vox AC15). With a PA, the amp is perfect.
