5.0 out of 5 stars a Southern Rock classic!
I have had this album on vinyl (2 of them), 8 track, cassette, and now cd. This is truly a classic rock album, not only Southern Rock. Toy Caldwell's guitar work is simply phenominal, as shown on "Ramblin'" and "Take the Highway". If there is a more powerful voice in rock than Doug Gray's, I don't want to hear it---it would be too scary! I can't...

3.0 out of 5 stars Tucker's First is one of their best
Somehow, the Marshall Tucker Band gets vastly overshadowed by the two pillars of Southern Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. But back in the bad ol' 70s, the Tuckers gave each of those other outfits a run for their money in terms of the quality of their music. Wjhle they didn't have a tragic genius like Duane Allman or Ronnie Van Zant on board, the still...

4.0 out of 5 stars Look Beyond "Can't You See", April 9, 2002
This review is from: Marshall Tucker Band (Audio CD)
The debut album of the Marshall Tucker Band contains the band's signature song "Can't You See." For a brief time back in the mid-1970s, MTB challenged Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers for southern rock supremacy. Less rocking and more country oriented than either of those bands, MTB created some excellent music beyond their occasional hit. After "Can't You See," the debut album contains the excellent songs "Take the Highway," "See You Later, I'm Gone" and the gospel flavored "My Jesus Told Me So." The rest of the material isn't bad, either.

Overall, MTB's debut album is a fine example of mid 70s southern rock.

4.0 out of 5 stars Prime Marshall Tucker, July 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Marshall Tucker Band (Audio CD)
This is one of the best Marshall Tucker Band albums to come out in the '70s. It is one of the few where Toy Caldwell's vocals are prominent.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first album, although in a different arrangement., June 3, 2001
This review is from: Marshall Tucker Band (Audio CD)
This album is a must have for all Southern rock or any rock fan for that matter. Every song is a keeper, which is rare. This album does NOT represent the true lineup of songs on the original LP, but they're all here. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Southern Rock At It's Best, August 25, 2000
By
This review is from: Marshall Tucker Band (Audio CD)
From the opening hard-driving "Take The Highway" to the heart-felt love song "Ab's Song", this album captivates the talent and versatility of the Tucker Boys. "Can't You See" will move most any listener, and the fine guitar work by Mr. Toy Caldwell is heard throughout the album. Toy Caldwell was both a great songwriter (he wrote all the songs on this album) and unique guitarist, picking with his thumb! Brother Tommy Caldwell is polished as a bass player, George McCorkle adds some fine rhythm guitar, and the flute playing of Jerry Eubanks adds to the band's unique sound. Great country-influenced songs include "Losing You" and "See You Later, I'm Gone". "Hillbilly Band" was the first song they mastered, and you can tell it on this record. "Ramlin" showcases the band's fine musicians and the strong vocals of Doug Gray. A must have for all Southern Rock fans, and serious music fans in general. Rest in peace Toy and Tommy Caldwell.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tucker's First is one of their best, August 17, 2000
This review is from: Marshall Tucker Band (Audio CD)
Somehow, the Marshall Tucker Band gets vastly overshadowed by the two pillars of Southern Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. But back in the bad ol' 70s, the Tuckers gave each of those other outfits a run for their money in terms of the quality of their music. Wjhle they didn't have a tragic genius like Duane Allman or Ronnie Van Zant on board, the still produced many great boogie rock songs. The best examples on their fine debut album are "Can't You See" (their biggest hit), "Take the Highway," "See You Later, I'm Gone" and "Losing You." They even get spiritual with "My Jesus Told Me So," which is strongly influenced by gospel music. Overall, this is a fine album that any fan of Southern or 70s rock should own.

3.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT THE DEBUT, August 4, 2006
This is not the debut album for The Marshall Tucker Band, and, sadly, it does not include "Take The Highway" or "Can't You See"; with that said, however, it's not a bad collection if you have no others and you get it at a low price.

4.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT DEBUT ALBUM!, July 11, 2003

As with my other review, I'm giving it a 4 based on the strength of 4 songs on this album: Take The Highway, Can't You See, Losing You and See You Later, I'm Gone. My favorite is See You Later, I'm Gone which is actually MTB's "first" country song. It is this one CD you can take to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rambling Away To This Hillbilly Band, March 8, 2003

This review is from: Marshall Tucker Band (Audio CD)
This is one super fine debut recording by the Marshall Tucker Band. These songs are written from the heart and soul and exhibit much energy and really soothe the soul.

Doug Gray is one of the true great singers in all of contemporary recorded music. Not to lnock Toy Caldwells vocals on Can't You See or Hillbilly Band. There is plenty of passion from him. Their voices just blend in nicely with the fine instrumentation of the other band members, background vocalists, and guest artists like Charlie Daniels, Paul Hornsby, and Jaimoe. Keyboards, saxaphones, fiddles, guitars,etc.. this record has it all.

Loud and soft but basically free and easy all of these tracks are winners. Take The Highway, Hillbilly Band, Can't You See, and My Jesus Told Me So stand out the most. But the other tracks are almost as good.

So all you southern rockers or any of those who like a little twang in your music, pick this one up real soon.
