My wife and I like the sound of the ocean so we run this machine during the daytime as well as night. The digital recordings are very clear and true-to-life. We can play two sounds at once - like sea gulls over the ocean. There is plenty of volume and the controls are intuitive if you're used to digital products. The only drawbacks is that I can sense the repetition in the gull recordings when I'm awake. It's a good product overall if you're an insomniac or have a baby.

Am unsure whether I'll return this or not.

This device has ~8 background sounds (2 rain, 2 waves, etc). I don't notice the problem with looping mentioned by others. There are ~8 overlay sounds which can be combined with the background noise- mainly various birds. Several of the bird sounds are a little unpleasant; when I first heard the owl I thought one of my kids was hurt.

My main gripe with this product is that when you keep it close by, there is a clear static background hiss at most volumes which becomes very annoying. I think if you were to keep it tucked further away into a corner that would not be an issue.

Thinking about it now, this device really doesn't do anything that a couple of $15 nature CDs can't do, & the CDs would likely have better sound quality.

The Marsona is an excellent idea. It basically allows you to create your own mix of nature/white noise sounds to sleep by. Let me start by saying that I use this product nightly and really enjoy it - but I'm still looking for something better.

Unfortunately, the built in speaker is very poor. I really couldn't get past the bad sound quality when I was trying to sleep. It was like trying to listen to a radio through a fast-food drive-through speaker.

I then hooked the line-out to my Bose clock-radio, which did make the sound tolerable. However, the sample-rate of the sounds recorded/simulated are of low quality, so they really can't be improved too much by a better speaker system.

On the good side, the sound variety and ability to mix sounds is wonderful. This provides you with a large combination of effects. If you want a surf with sea birds, bouys and loons one night, then a stream with hawks and frogs the next, it is easy. Don't like frogs? Add an owl instead.

My sleep is very important, and I'm willing to pay a lot for a better quality sound conditioner. Improve the sample rate of the sound and try again.

Go to Marpacs website and listen to the samples of their sounds. Listen to the sounds for their most expensive machine 1288 for the sounds of nature and their white sound. [...]

Now look up Joe Baker on the amazon website for mp3 downloads and listen to the sounds you can download to your computer by Joe Baker and you will find that his sound quality is much higher. The Ocean Waves are awesome and a .99 cent download, plus they have rain, mountain stream, and even ultrapure white noise for those who don't want a nature sound for less then a dollar each.

After you download these to your computer, burn them to a cd. Use a Cd player in your room that has a repeat playback ability. My wife said that this really helped her since I snore at night. I hope this review saves you money and gets you a great night sleep for only a few dollars.

Pros: Great quality sound with secondary sound overlay. Haven't noticed the loop end like on cheaper models. Many programmable options for secondary sounds.

Cons: Somewhat large, runs on AC power only (no battery option), and sound timer is fixed at 1hr. I consider these to be minor issues.

This Product works even in San Francisco the world's nosiest city. Between modified mufflers, street people, loud mouthed drunks and and 4AM garbage trucks this machine drowns out all of the cities charming noises. Thank you.

I recently purchased my second Marsona 1288A Sound Conditioner. The first works great but I travel frequently and found it much easier just to buy a second unit for traveling. If you are like me and have to have white noise or some other sound to sleep and want a top of the line unit, this is the unit for you. The price may seem a little high, but the unit is made to last and I do not experience the same problems with the Marsona unit that I have had with other units. For example, other units have had problems with interference causing static. Another unit that I purchased even had a timer only and could not be turned on for longer than an hour. These problems are non-existent in the Marsona 1288A. It can be turned up to a loud volume to mask snoring, traffic, and other noises. It's truly the top of the line sound conditioner that is made to work well and last long term.

Years ago I bought the Model 1288 and returned it because some of the sounds were obviously "loops" and instead of relaxing me to sleep, they kept me awake because my mind locked on to the repetitiveness. This version, the 1288A, uses digital synthesis to create the sounds and is better. The sound are realistic. The speaker is slightly smaller than the one in the original but sounds just as good. A bit more low-frequency response would be nice, but it's still fairly authentic-sounding. I have noticed that the "rain" sound still is in the form of a "loop" but it's much less obtrusive and still helps me sleep. I suspect the other sounds are the same way but I haven't detected it yet.

Where this unit really shines is when using the output jack to another device. The outputted frequency response is fairly wide-range and stereo. I've plugged this into my multichannel system and when using the 5-channel stereo mode with the lights off it feels like I am outside during a rainstorm or at the beach.

This is a good product for anyone who likes to relax or sleep to natural sounds.
