Editorial Reviews

EMI Classics is pleased to release the latest installment of highlights from the Martha Argerich Project at the Lugano Festival. This is the tenth annual 3-CD set celebrating the musical fruits of a project in which young artists join seasoned performers, including Martha Argerich herself, to explore wide-ranging chamber music and orchestral repertoire, both well known and rarely heard. The collection, recorded in the summer of 2012, is being released in anticipation of the Festival's 2013 season in June.

As a chamber music event which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2011, this series has become a laboratory that gives guest artists a chance to prove themselves not only in well-known masterpieces but also in rarely performed repertoire. Live at Lugano Festival 2012 welcomes back mainly familiar names from the previous Live releases including Virgin Classics' inimitable violin and cello soloist brothers, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon. The 3-CD set includes Prokofiev s Sonata No. 2in D featuring Renaud Capucon as well as Brahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn for Two Pianos featuring Argerich and Nicholas Angelich.

Few artists have nurtured and promoted emerging young musicians with the level of personal commitment shown by Martha Argerich. In the process, she has created inspired and inspirational chamber music partnerships mixing established and up-and-coming artists. A legend in her own lifetime for her technical mastery and passionate artistry, Argerich possesses an infectious spirit that has fired her own performances and partnerships as well as those of her colleagues and protégés.

Martha Argerich seems to have inexhaustible musical resources. She is the tireless beating heart of her annual festival in Lugano where she brings together famous artists and rising stars to delight music-lovers with mostly chamber gems (of various constitutions), but also concertante works of the repertory, to showcase the refined musicianship of these special invited artists. Often, Argerich herself is featured in electrifying series of concerts along with Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, the local orchestra supplying the symphonic dimension of the festival. Or even in chamber appearances along with her musical akin partners.

As usual, EMI is treasuring these wonderful moments and issues yearly a 3-CD coffret to cherish this high-voltage music-making. There are selected the most ardent moments to be committed to disc. For instance, here Argerich shines in a Mozart concerto (K 503) or in a seductive duo with Maria Joao Pires (Mozart sonata K 381). Nevertheless, she is also the absolute star in Schumann, Brahms, Prokofiev or Smetana and Mariano Mores works.

As her stage partners are fond of pairing her in such magic moments of music, Argerich's fans from around the world jubilate too when listening to these 3-CDs. Greatly recommended!

EMI's commitment to release almost a dozen box sets of chamber music from Lugano has been a boon to all lovers of chamber music. Martha Argerich's personal festival is the closest that Europe comes to the spirit of Rudolf Serkin's Marlboro Festival and Casals' Prades Festival. Serkin never loved four-hand and two-piano music to the almost obsessive extent that Argerich does. The 2012 installment contains essentially a whole CD devoted to these works, with a transcription of La Mer for three pianos thrown in for good measure. given how beautifully played everything is, it's a small indulgence, especially at bargain price.

Almost automatically one expects these to be five-star collections, but this year I'm not so sure. the number of unusual works seems very small; the La Mer is a pointless novelty - too much of Debussy's orchestral masterpiece is lost and nothing gained by hearing three percussive instruments approximate his diaphanous textures; and one performance, of the Dvorak Piano quartet Op. 87, is throbbing and aggressive - a dud. Of course, other listeners may disagree on all counts, but the clincher for me was the inclusion of Argerich's fourth - or is it the fifth? - rendition of Brahms's Haydn Var. for two pianos. It may e a favorite piece of hers, but this is overkill.

On the positive side of the ledger, some of the highlights from 2012 include the youthful Mahler Piano Quartet as played by Mischa and two other Maiskys, the Prokofiev Violin sonata no. 2 with Renaud Capucon and Argerich, and the rarely herd but evocatively romantic Piano quintet of Nikolia Medtner (1880-1951), a conservative post-Romantic Russian composer revered at home but not often played abroad.

Imagine being the finest pianist in the world. Imagine organizing you own festival. Imagine inviting only the people you really like to play with you. Imagine making a superb recording of all the performances. Well, there you have it. A totally enjoyable 3 CD set that captures Martha and friends at Lugano in 2012. Oh yeah, imagine eating great Italian food every night after the performances. Life is good.

You probably are familiar with this Lugano Festival series of recording. Most of us buy them for the Argerich tracks (and rightly so) but all selections on this one, even when she is not involved, are wonderful. She seems to inspire all the other participants. Now we all wait for the 2014 one.
