Fun but not for serious research,
By
This review is from: The Martha Washington Cook Book (Paperback)
This book is a collection of modernized recipes from the Martha Washington cookbook (that really wasn't written by Martha just in case you wanted to know). For the person who wants to have a colonial themed dinner or for a school theme function it is fine. For the real historian who wants to delve into period cooking please keep going. Hannah Glasse will be the right choice for you.

I didn't buy this for the recipes to cook, I bought it for the historical information and because I'm descended from the Lewis family, and wanted to see the actual recipes. I was disappointed that there weren't more of the original recipes, in fact most of the book was what the author wrote about the ways of life back then. There were very few recipes, and the ones that were listed had been altered by the author. It should be called the Marie Kimball cookbook, not the Martha Washington cookbook. It was only what the author chose to include and what she wanted us to know instead of letting us read it for ourselves.

I was excited to order this and even did the preview of some of the pages but when I opened up the box I was disappointed in my purchase. The history part was okay but I was hoping it had more and the recipes you really can use. For almost 20 dollars I just expected more.

Very interesting book about how the people of her day ate, cooked, and the receipts for those meals. Sometimes they ate simply, and sometimes they ate elegantly.

I am a cook and I collect cookbooks as a result. This one is very good with the added history.
