A must have for every Martial Artist of any style,
By A Customer
This review is from: Martial Artist's Way (Paperback)
Glen Doyle is refreshing with his book by the relaxed method of how he tells it to you, instead of the usual "down the throat" other books portray. Each chapter is insightful, meaingful and compassionate. I already read the book but I keep going back to it because I always pick up something new from it. My favorite chapter is titled "Making your Style your Own." Glenn tells you to listen to the voice in your head, to find the courage to change your mind if a style isn't working for you.

A Must Have Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Martial Artist's Way (Paperback)
Sifu Doyle writes from the body, the mind and the spirit, and shares the depth of his experience in practical, down-to-earth terms. His book is like a new-found friend and a long-time buddy rolled into one - a welcome traveling companion on the journey of life. With clear examples and accessible language, Sifu Doyle elucidates the power and dissipates the myths of the inner world of martial arts. The chapters on Choosing a Style and a School contain sound advice for beginners. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Training, Cross-training, and the Street.Sifu Doyle's book is a valuable resource for everyone because his style encourages the reader to look into themselves for answers and encompasses concepts that are universal to any ongoing process - training, running a business, running a household, any art or craft. As an acupuncturist and a martial artist, I wholeheartedly look forward to referring many people to "The Martial Artist's Way" in the years to come.

A must book for any apprentice and/or expert martial artist,
By A Customer
This review is from: Martial Artist's Way (Paperback)
Having been a karate instructor for 10 years, I found the book incredibly informative; Sifu Doyle trancends the traditional martial art style barriers. This book provides the reader with fundamental knowledge and insight necessary for any would-be martial artist. Even an accomplished martial artist would find this book quite informative and enlightening, as it does not address the mechanics of any specific style, but rather the individual fighter as a whole. I particularily enjoyed the chapters on Competition, Psychological Make-Up and Cross-Training. I also appreciated Sifu Doyle's easy writing style which clearly explained the topic of discussion. Whereas most writers would preach about their style, Sifu Doyle takes an indepth look at you, the martial artist and pushes you to examine the things that make you tick.If you have ever considered studying the martial arts, this book is for you. If you are an accomplished martial artist, you can learn that extra 15% that could push you to the top.

A great little primer of a work,
By Paul Lawrence "'EJL'" (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Martial Artist's Way (Paperback)
Sifu Glen Doyle has here written a nifty little book that is meant more as a treatise of how to approach the martial arts rather then the intricacies of where the little finger of your left hand should be when you deliver a spinning heel kick. As such he has supplied a real need given the simple and straight forward language he uses that makes this book an easily digestible read for experienced hands and newcomers alike. Whatever his talents at 'doing' martial arts, it's certainly clear that Sifu Doyle 'understands' them.
The book is broken up into easily followed and defined chapters and is well set out as well as being fairly devoid of impenetrable jargon. In fact if anyone you know asks you why you bother with martial arts this probably wouldn't be a bad book to sling their way as many of the concepts the author discusses in terms of learning curves etc can be pretty much applied far more broadly than just in a martial aspect. Perhaps the best and last recommendation I can give to this little book is that I lent it to a younger student in a class I was taking and she has never brought it back to me!

A refreshing look at the martial arts.,

This review is from: Martial Artist's Way (Paperback)
Written in an unpretentious style, this book would appeal to anyone who is interested in the martial arts, and has a lot to say even to those who aren't. Glen Doyle's engaging personality brightens up every page and keeps the book lively. He is obviously someone who lives the talk and walks the walk. I found it fascinating even though I'm not a martial artist. Almost every page has quotes that will linger in my mind and which I can apply to my every day life. I would definitely recommend this book.

As a student...,

This review is from: Martial Artist's Way (Paperback)
In my opinion, this book is great. It not only shows the technique of martial arts but how the sport can be fun. I have been under the instruction of Glen for two summers now. The group of figure skaters I am with are his youngest students. He makes the sport easy for all of us and tells many stories about how his book came to be and his road to victory. I have to say, this book is about as good as the live show. It's an all-around great book.

The nonmartial artist will enjoy it, too,

This review is from: Martial Artist's Way (Paperback)
A lively, well written guide to the martial arts. In addition to his impressive credentials, Mr. Doyle has a clear, concise writing style well suited to this subject. He takes the reader from choosing a martial art, a teacher and a club to the training and mental discipline required, which is fascinating in its own right, and can be applied to how we learn anything in life. I recommend this title to anyone, not just martial arts practitioners.

A breath of fresh air. Glen Doyle has really made a move forward in the martial arts literary scene. I didn't know what to expect, but I never expected such an easy read from a book with so much information and insight.

Sifu Doyle teaches from the heart,
By
This review is from: Martial Artist's Way (Paperback)
In this engaging book, Sifu Doyle does not try to teach you how to practice the martial arts, rather how to approach them. From things like picking a style to choosing a instructor, he gives the student a wealth of good advice in a totally understandable form. He is great at making the mystical and sometime confusing world of the martial arts accessible to anyone. While he's obviously well schooled in "classic" martial arts, it's his devotion to taking what is right for the individual and making a style one's own that stand out. He respects the traditions of his art, but is not constrained by the forms that he has learned. This lesson is a valuable one in every facet of life.
