A trite dismissal of martial arts as occult heresy.,

This review is from: Martial Arts & Yoga (Paperback)
Miss Shyrme's sincerity is evident but the work is deeply flawed. Neither the contention that martial arts have supernatural aspects, nor that those aspects are "demonic", are supported with anything better than anecdotal evidence, and no orthodox or otherwise Christian practicioners of these disciplines were consulted. Oddly the book includes an extensive explanation of martial arts terminology and of some Eastern religious concepts. The former is eccentric; for instance, aikido, the quintessential "soft" art, is classified as a "hard" style. Ms. Shyre uses arbitary selections of Scripture in, shall we say, "unusual" contexts, to reinforce her personal aversion to physical violence and Oriental words and ideas. A serious Christian critic of martial arts would be poorly advised to advance her arguments to a practicioner , and to the Christian practioner the book is of no special interest unless he agrees with the author that he is a pawn of demonic forces in need of rescue.
