Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
When it comes to tearjerker movies (also known in some quarters as "chick flicks"), the Hollywood score shorthand is a delicate piano line. You hear it and you know the guys in the audience were dragged to the multiplex. That piano shows up, of course, on "Main Title" here, and for good measure, composer Aaron Zigman combines it with soothing strings. The rest of the score opens up to a wider range of instruments: percussion, lightly picked acoustic guitar, clarinet, what sounds like a sitar. But the overall mood is so subdued, so wan, that the music almost collapses on itself for lack of structural support. Cues like "Breaking Dishes" and "Hot Coffee" really stick out because they're among the very, very few where Zigman picks up the pace. A bit more variety would have been welcome. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3.0 out of 5 stars What! Sans Guster?, January 2, 2008
Although this is the original score soundtrack for the Martian Child, I think they still should've included Guster's "Satellite," which was used during the martian "talk" scene between Dennis and David. It's a great track and it would've made this soundtrack a lot better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, except..., March 19, 2008
By HelloLori (Eugene, OR) - See all my reviews
like the reviewer before me, I simply cannot believe Guster's Satellite was not included in this soundtrack compilation. It was the most memorable musical scene in the movie for my 10 yr old son and I. We must have replayed the "Martian Dance" 20x's. We loved the song, the scene. I am forever perplexed why soundtracks often exclude certain songs from their roster. What a disappointment this time. BTW, the movie was worth watching... I am pleased my son coerced me rent it for us. Smiles...

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, October 27, 2008
This soundtrack brings me back to sitting in the theatre watching this sweet film with a big bag o' popocorn. Sadly, the soundtrack consists only of the orchestral arrangements and does not include the more memorable songs from the film including "Satellite" by Guster and "Mr. Blue Sky" by ELO. I would've given it 5 stars had it included those songs.
