5.0 out of 5 stars Better than we expected
My son bought this with his allowance money. He thought it looked like fun, but this is way better than what we imagined it would be. He was able to start working with it without even needing the directions, and I liked it because it didn't require any baking or heat lamp to make the aliens. That's a lot better than the bug factories and things like that we've had...

3.0 out of 5 stars it's alright
got this for my 7 1/2 year old son. he couldn't wait to play with it, played with it for maybe 2 days, since then it's been sitting on the side. he'll look at it and make sure his "aliens" are still ok, but still hasn't made any more. the aliens are kind of cute, but they look like gummy candies, so be aware if you have any little ones who may want to try and eat them...

He was able to start working with it without even needing the directions, and I liked it because it didn't require any baking or heat lamp to make the aliens. That's a lot better than the bug factories and things like that we've had before. On top of that, the case is a cool spaceship that doubles as a toy for the aliens you make. Here's what my son had to say about it:

I liked the different kinds of aliens that you could make. It was cool. I made some really funky ones. There's really cool goo stuff to make the aliens. It was awesome. I really liked it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice over Creepy Crawlers, March 5, 2008
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Martian Matter Alien Maker Playset - Spaceship (Toy)
Very impressed w/ this toy. Concept is similar to Creepy Crawlers w/out the hassel of electricity (heat, danger, and time to cook) or odor. Martian Matter is quick, easy, odor free, not messy, and end results/variety is excellent and brightly colored. Each Martian sets firm in just 5 minutes. The clay in which you make an impression mold is soft and fluffy-not hard to manage or crumbly. Three small cans of different colored clay are included-a note states if clay becomes dry you can add drops of water as necessary. You get about 10 half Martian mold pieces which are all "pairable"-any two will make a unique Martian. The amount of liqiud used is very small and you get three 3oz. bottles; enough to make probably 50 or more Martians. The storage unit is an adorable spaceship which cleverly houses everything neat and orderly! There's even 3 clear dome covered seat pods to hold your favorite 3 Martians! Sure to be a huge hit for the 5-10 yr old group!

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Better Then Expected, March 7, 2008

I bought this for my nephews 7th birthday. I thought electricity would be needed but nope, just mold and wait. It was a huge hit and we made probably 20 aliens the first day. I also bought some refills but we havent had to open them yet. You can make lots of aliens with the three bottles of Lunar Lava and three cannisters of Meteor Mud included. The space ship is adorable and holds all your supplies. There are three pods on the front of the spaceship to store your creations. You get a knife and tweezers to perform your very own alien autopsies! The instructions are clear and pictures are provided. You even get instructions on how to make your alien have gooey guts! This toy is a hoot and my only complaint is one of the pods top will not stay on.

My 8 y/o wanted this toy for his birthday. Personally, I was skeptical. I worried it would be too hard to use and prove to be boring.

Turns out, I needn't have worried.

He put it together himself in three minutes following the clear instructions. I showed him one time how to press the Martian Mud into the circular mold then close the hatch to make impressions with the figures he'd picked out. The Mud is quite easy for little hands to manipulate, and the bottles of Lava (the goo that makes the Martians) are easy for little hands to grasp, too.

He's been an alien-making fiend ever since, coming up with all sorts of combinations. He sometimes uses two colors of Lava to make an alien, and loves putting them together with two heads.

I'm not sure this toy is educational, per se, but it's provided him with hours of fun already. The refills are reasonably priced, too, considering how long the stuff lasts. Great toy!

I live near Nashville TN and they were airing a commercial for this product on some cartoon channel. I searched everywhere even EBAY with no luck or too high. Found it on Amazon at a super price. Got it fast and my 2 grandsons Haden and Gavin are still lovin' makin' aliens evertime they visit Nana Mona. Better than I thought it would be. Neat to store it all away. No heat required.

My son got Martian Matter for his 5th birthday. He has really been enjoying it! We do play-doh a lot, so it's fun to do something a little different once in a while. When friends come over they've had fun making the aliens. It does require my assistance, otherwise I think we'd have the slimy stuff all over the place. The way it works is you make a mold with a substance like play-doh, and then you fill it in with a slimy gel like substance. Then you wait about 10 minutes for it to dry. Unless your child is very neat it can become quite a mess. But, as I said...we've been doing it together.

My son absolutely loves this! We recently moved to our house, and he didn't know many of the other kids on the street. He used the Martian Matter Alien Maker outside one afternoon, and it piqued the interest of several of the neighborhood kids. Soon, they were all joining in and making their own aliens! For us, it was a great icebreaker! There's minimal mess, and the kids love making their own weird little alien combinations. Every other day I hear, "MOM,puh-leeze can I make an alien??" Two thumbs up!

My son has more toys than I'd like to admit, but this is one of our favorites. I'd say this is in our top three (and for the price, I'd probably say it's # 1).
My son is 5 and he can create his aliens by himself with absolutely no help from us (this is great for those times where you need to keep your child busy so you can clean, etc).
We showed him how to make the aliens the first time and he picked it up immediately.
We do make him use a towel (or some other protective surface so the gel doesn't get on our carpet). You'll also need a hard surface (we use a hard cover book) for cutting the martians open. When they're cut open, the gel oozes out. When it's dried up (a few minutes), it wipes right off of the back of the book.
If your little one decides to cut the martian open, you can add a little gel and "glue" them back together. (Just let it sit for a few minutes)

I can't find a single fault to this toy. The refills are easy to find and very inexpensive. The toy is small and very easy to store (everything fits on or in the spaceship).

I wish I could give this toy 10 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars So much fun!, July 27, 2008

My son got this 2 weeks ago for his 5th birthday. He loves it! The spaceship has these cute pods with clear covers where you can store the little aliens when they're made (if they're left out in open air they eventually dry up, but if they're protected from "too much oxygen" they stay pliable and live better!) The meteor mud mold material is like Playdoh but somewhat softer. The lunar lava bottles of 3 different colors is liquidy and easy to handle, as it doesn't pour out too fast. We work on a sheet of aluminum foil, and he has so much fun making aliens of different colors. I am surprised how long his interest has lasted. Various steps involved, but not at all overwhelming. It's a great toy.

My niece wanted this for her birthday, but no one was able to find it. I love such "missions" and not only found the toy, but founf a much better deal at the manufacturers website. I was able to get the main toy plus 5 refills for about $45 (including tax and shipping)! With a discount code I found on another site, this turned out to be a great deal and my family fulfilled her birthday wish :)
