Editorial Reviews

Filmed during the 18th edition of the Verbier Festival, Martin Helmchen presents a program of Bach, Liszt and Beethoven that highlights the adaptability of his technique. From the incessant rhythm of a Bach dance to the filigree of Liszt's virtuosic showpieces, Helmchen 'connects seriousness and wistfulness with success', drawing the audience in through his expressive playing and gesture.

My thanks to the reader who has informed me of the double listing of this review - one correct and one incorrect (exact misplacing not identified).
Unfortunately this is a common software problem, especially where listings share similar titles, and cannot be corrected by reviewers.
Please be patient and understanding therefore and either scroll down past this review or read it for unintentional additional interest if appropriate! Best wishes - Ian Giles

Review of ‘Lars Vogt – Live at Verbier 2011 follows:

Lars Vogt brings a distinctive approach to this thought provoking disc recorded in 2011. The disc is a combination of a solo recital paired with a concerto performance recorded some 3 days later with the youthful Verbier Festival chamber Orchestra under Gabor Takacs-Nagy. The whole disc is well recorded visually and the sound is presented in good quality stereo. This delivers very realistic piano sound especially in the solo recital.

Lars Vogt brings a very distinctive style to his playing on this recital which is probably indicative of his general approach to making music. In general terms he favours a slightly forward moving tempo but without any sense of hurry. His touch is lyrically gentle but firm and the whole is underpinned by a clear control of rhythmic pulse. The combined result provides an undemonstrative but intriguing and very rewarding musical experience for the listener.

The Janacek 'In the Mists' commences the recital in a fairly sombre way as these late pieces reflect Janacek's inward struggles with life at the time. Each of the four movements is essentially reflective but with central energetic outbursts before dying away.
