Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this unusual biography, readers will learn more about the spiritual King, whose faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation for his life and legacy. Author Deats (editor of Fellowship magazine) briefly met King, studied under King's professors at Boston University School of Theology and eventually worked with King's wife, Coretta (who wrote the foreword). Deats reveals the behind-the-scenes events that informed King's "turn the other cheek" approach to peaceful change. From bus segregation in Montgomery to the Selma campaign for voting rights, King inspired blacks and whites across America to dream of a "Beloved Community" whose watchwords were morality, respect and equality. As a biography, this text will enlighten readers with one real-life example after another. In one instance, King's religious beliefs led him and his family to relocate to the slums of Chicago to protest against the abject poverty that abounded in the urban North. Working tirelessly to bring about economic equality for African-Americans, King also invested time and energy converting local gang members to his nonviolent movement. The author includes a helpful chronology at the end of the book that succinctly highlights the major events of King's life. (Dec.)

About the Author

Richard Deats is a southerner who was influenced by King while in college. He has subsequently led a lifelong commitment to civil rights. He is the editor of Fellowship, the magazine of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, and is the author of Ambassador of Reconciliation A Muriel Lester Reader. He received his PhD at the Boston U. School of Theology in part because that is where King studied. He knew King and later worked with Mrs. King on the Martin Luther King Holiday Commission and the MLK Center for Nonviolent Social Change. He was present in the Rose Garden when President Reagan signed the bill establishing the King Federal Holiday. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to King's life and thought, February 21, 2009
By
Glen G (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
Having read dozens of books on King and the civil rights movement, I wondered what Deats might have to offer. When I finished it I started reading it again, a chapter at a time in order to give my attention to thinking about what it had to say to my own efforts to contribute to social change. It is both an exceptionally useful source of reflection for experienced activists, and a wonderful introduction to King's life and thought.
