Editorial Reviews

MARTIN LUTHER (1953 Classic) is a hostorical epic on a grand scale. It captures the life and times of the greatest figure of the Protestant Reformation with depth and clarity, while giving a glimpse at the private man at the eye of the storm. Luther's protest against the established order of the Church opened up a debate that still goes on today and gave birth to one of the largest religious movements in history. One man's conscience truly changed the course of human events.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well-done classic, September 14, 2007

This review is from: Martin Luther - 1953 - Niall MacGinnis CLASSIC (DVD)
Growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the late '60s and early '70s, it was an annual ritual for our grade school classes to go over to our church (Atonement Lutheran) to watch the "Martin Luther film" just before Reformation Day on October 31st. Back then, the film was rented on giant reels. The memories of those days and the images from the film remain clear many years later, and I am pleased that it exists on DVD, although it does need to be re-mastered. The historical accuracy is reasonably good--moreso than some of the more recent Luther films, which have taken liberties in order to render the story line more appealing to today's "excitement-based" audiences. For those who want a no-nonsense, "real" look at the historical Martin Luther, this film is surely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must See, April 26, 2007
This review is from: Martin Luther - 1953 - Niall MacGinnis CLASSIC (DVD)
I saw this movie in the 1950's and just saw it again. It is a classic in every way. But what bugs me is why they don't remaster it. The dumbest movies are remastered, yet, this one remains as original. Still, it is a must see, and deserves 5 stars even with the flaws.
